I just googled Ashless two-cycle oil and there's quite a few of them...
I guess you would need to define high vs low ash in relation to other oils. Two stroke oils tend be high in detergent and dispersement additive to keep ring lands clean and more recently, exhaust valves. Calcium and magnesium are typical detergent additives and they are not ashless. But some two stroke oils could replace them with small amounts of ester base oil as it's an excellent detergent. This would make the detergent package ashless.

I see some "ashless" weed whacker oils on the shelf at Menards for a couple dollars a bottle and I can assure you there is no way they are making a true ashless oil at that price point. It's pure marketing. In the hydraulic and motor oil world, ashless oils are generally double to triple the price of their low ash counterparts.

Which makes me wonder… you can get Mystik for $15 (per a comment above) but VES is like $60 🤔

Most engine builders I know (much smarter than I, but I do listen 😉) will often say the stickiest, dirtiest oil is best for your rotating assemblies but not desirable in modern 2 smokes for various reasons. I still don't think any brand of oil will cause a failure as long as you run the proper type that is called for.

Marketing on the part of Polaris and a tremendous sense of fear they put into their customers. The brand I use is about $35 a gallon but $15 seems incredibly low.
It's the same with Harley bike products...you pay for that name. I've seen their motor oil for well over $15 a qt. here. Imo, its nothing special, but many will buy it, thinking their engines will fail with something similar.

Correct, and Harley doesn't make their own oil, nor does anyone else that I'm aware of, which means... someone else makes it... perhaps an oil company haha.

Last I knew Lube tech made Polaris oil, and I think they made Doo's XPS as well.

Every time I go down this oil worm hole, I smack myself in the head and make myself remember there are no insanely exotic materials in these engines that requires special unicorn piss harvested by oompa loompas during a solar eclipse.

VES is pretty sticky from what I’ve seen - but I use it

Actually Sunoco makes Harley Davidson's motor oils, but the retail markup Harely puts on it, is outrageous.

Just went to Blain's Farm and Fleet and ordered 2 more gallon jugs of Mystic JT4 Full Synthetic Snowmobile oil at $32.99 per gallon. Shipped with sales tax total was right at $85 to my door. With shipping the best value seems to be to buy 4 gallons at a time.
I make sure the mystic JT4 I get is the snowmobile specific full synthetic not the sea and snow synthetic blend if you want that one it is currently $22.99 per gallon as of right now.

How does the Mystic smell? I used to run Amsoil back in the day and it was the worst smelling crap you could buy IMO. More recently I just run factory oil, Ski Doo and now VES since I bought my first Polaris last fall. What's a few extra bucks in oil when your spending 17k+ on a sled?

I have not ran it yet so can't comment on the mystic's smell. I was running Amsoil Dominator in my 2003 renegade. No complaints and no issues with the amsoil dominator in my limited use. It smelled fine but I am crazy and like the smell of 2 stroke. I have no first hand experience with the ves ves extreme or the mystic but from what I have been able to research the mystic full synthetic snowmobile is really good oil and well priced. That is why I went with it. I believe it is superior to the polaris oils(seen info with it being a much cleaner oil). And the polaris oils are fine many have ran them without issue for big miles that said I can save money and imo get a better oil so that's why I went with Mystic JT4. I was also looking hard at the Legend 2 cycle oils. I believe there are many fine choices in oil honestly so I don't get super paranoid over it. Hoping for an excellent snow season for us all this coming winter enjoy your machine and whatever oil you chose to run in it

Hey, I say run whatever your comfortable with and I'm in no position to judge anyone for their opinions or preferences. I myself am not a high mileage per season rider. One gallon gets it done for me per winter so the cost is really of no great importance for me. Maybe and hopefully my wife/kids will want to get involved one day and then it will matter but at this point where I live Im happy to get one good trip with the boys per year. I live in Delaware and ride primarily in Maine and people down here look at me like I have three eyes when I tell them I snowmobile hahaha.

Def all preference - I know it’s kind of a “thing” people get passionate about but like everything else I guess. I hear Mystik is good - I have 3 cases I got in trade but I also have a bunch of VES and it’s all I’ve ever used so I’m reluctant to try it. I’ve seen my exhaust valves and plugs with VES and they do get caked up and sticky BUT my 600 has 14k miles on the motor without ever being apart so it must be ok and… I like the smell haha
