How do I syinc the carbs on my 98 xcr 700?

98 has round slide carbs..

loosen up cable to the carbs so the slides bottom out

then set each slide height to .98 using a drill bit "in next to the nozzle under the slide" with the idle screws "if slides don't bottom out on .98 then cable is still too tight"

after each carb is set to .98

tighten up the calbes start with the center til you can feel slight movement.
then repeat on remaining carbs.

play with the throttle a bit holding 2 slides at at a time you should feel the differences..

now the trick is to get them to move the same if ctr carb moves first loosen the ctr carb a touch til it matches the pto side.. make sure the carb cables are relatively close to begin with then check the mag side..

you have to repeast as needed til yuo get the feel.. for the adjustments

but you also have to make sure there is enough tension on the slides with the cables to close up the saftey switch in the throttle box.

hope it helps.. take you're time, be paitent. check recheck and check again..

I believe Roger means .098". But, because these aren't rack-mounted carbs like a 800 XCR, you will have a hard time setting to this spec unless you remove each carb and preset it from the OUTLET side before installation. And, the 700 may not end up at the same dimension as a 800.

On round slide carbs, I would recommend setting them while installed using a 7/32-1/4" drill bit from the INLET side under the cutaway of the slide. If the engine was idleing at the correct rpm before, just pick a drill bit that fits under the tightest one. This is to get them all equal at idle only. Mark each thumb screw adjuster with red dry marker so later you can raise/lower the slides equally to achieve desired idle rpm.

Make sure each idle air screw is set the same as specified on the underhood jetting label.

Then adjust each cable to achieve equal opening as throttle is moved. Pay attention to maintaining correct slack in throttle lever to make safety switch work correctly. You may have to readjust this after you set the slides to the desired idle rpm.
