And cost almost $20,000 back then. Probably over $30,000 in today's money. Who is going to buy something that costs that much that you are lucky to be able to use for 3 months out of the year?
Don't underestimate the rich and brainless... Harley has an entire division (CVO) catering to them

They had 1st gen and a 2nd gen elite... I just recently seen a 2nd gen for sale in Gaylord, MI on CL for $20k

They actually had 3 generations as the second came out as a limited edition in 1977 powered by the same LC engine as the Everest 444

I still can't wrap my head around the sxs crazy let alone a sxs sled. I ride a sled, atv , bike for the experience of riding, not to just have my ass plopped down in a seat like my pickup truck. Just my two cents on it all.

I can see some body spending $25000.00 on one sled if his wife don't want to drive any more. Or if replaceing his and his wife's sleds with one instead two $12000.00 sleds. Or mabey want to get into sleddeing with a heated cab. I think the front could stay alot the same. New big bore two strokes I would think have plenty of power. I'm not talking about making them any wider. Running cab heater on high I think would help with low snow conditions.

Did the elite ever make into to actual production?
Of course. They are well loved in areas where folks use them like a sports car to leave their home/cabin on a lake, go to a supper club for a meal and drinks and schmooze their neighbors, and then drive it back home. St. Germaine & Minocqua Wisconsin, had quite a few running around in the day.

I never thought canam spyders wouldnt sell but they do. Half the goldwings for sale are tryks. A,lot of Harley tryks allso. Me and wife fit in a 50in Razor with some extra room. Fro nt ends already done. 600 or 800 motors are plenty of power. Put two alpha rails with two 12in tracks. Any one with some engineering background out there figure out where to put your feet to keep it under four ft wide. Don't think it would take over sledsales, but there are people looking for something a little more refinded than a sit out in the cold wind like typical sled.
