Are they tearing down the Balsams Resort or remodeling. With the talk of a casino. I think that would be a great place. Where else can you ride a sled to casino and gamble for your next new sled.

The Balsam's unfirtunately is too far away from any major metropolitan area to consider a casino. IMHO
It may be a challenge to find investors to commit to a large investment in that remote location.
They have started some work on the property, including a controlled burn of 1 of building's on the property and other parts of the property have been domolished already.

The building that was demolished was an employee dormitory ( from what I was told ) and was no longer needed. I'm sure they will preserve alot of the historical charm while updateing the whole place. Theres no doubt it needed it bad. As long as they still let the sled trail thru their back yard, I'm good with whatever they want to do.

I think the location of a casino is irrelevant, people travel great distances to go to Foxwoods or Mohegan, hell look at Las Vegas, people travel from around the world to go there and its a dessert! Either way it is a historic site and I hope they find investors to restore it, although I will miss riding up the ski area like we have been able to do the past couple of years.

The re-building of The Balsams will take a lot longer than it will to replace the bricks and mortar. The client base has moved on, and to rebuild customer base in the current economic climate will be an uphill battle! People have discovered new favorite vacation spots. There is a long legacy for the "new and improved" Balsams to live up to.
I'm not sure the gambling thing would be the right fit for the GNW.

I was up there the day they did the controlled burn, kind of suprised when I rode up on it
there was no one there, except a few of us on snowmobiles ..
I wonder if they will make snowmobiling part of the new facilty, with affordable options and sled rentals ... only time will tell

The Tillotson family was always friendly and supportive of the snowmobile community. Delaware North carried on the same friendship and support. We have enjoyed trails through the property as long as I can remember. I'm quite sure the new owners will be supportive too. Whether or not they will gear the new facility to rentals and such is yet to be seen. I am quite sure they will be friendly to any groups that will help fill the new house!

The best occupancy that the old Balsams enjoyed for many years before the doors were closed was when NHSA brought The Easter Seals Ride In there! I am sure that the new owners will realize the value that snowmobiling brings to The Great North Woods. I predict a very good working relationship between the new Balsams management and the snowmobilers that come to the area.

Having lived in Colebrook (graduated in '82) and worked at the Balsams as a kid....I'm liking the direction the current owners are going. Most of the demo you see in the above pics is the old rubber factory that was a big eyesore at the Resort. I'm liking the idea of a Casino...think about it....sledding and skiing in the winter and scenic views + hiking in the summer. You will be able to bring your women and leave her in the Casino while you tear up the trails with your buds! It will be the new place to be when it's finished. :)
