I did the exact same thing. $5.00 trash bin at home depot. Works perfect!

 

I cannot believe how many posts there are about extending the flap or adding scratchers. Polaris should be ashamed. So far I'm not convinced I need to do either BUT one weekend on hard pack trails may change my mind. So far I have been able to keep it barely in check by seeking out loose snow when it climbs. I like this waste basket idea. The curve looks perfect.

 

To be honest, the first year I had my Indy with the stock track I had ZERO cooling issues. Ran 120-125 all day except when the snow got a little too sloppy. But, this year I added a tracks USA 128" kit, and I had lots of snow flying out underneath my stock snow flap.

I never had cooling issues with the stock Indy.

 

I only have about 100 miles on so far . Some just around the fields and about 60-70 on the half dirt half snow trails around here.....I have not seen the temp over 134 yet and almost every time I take a glance it seems to be 127 . Ill be watching because of all the posts though!

 

Clean lookin setups! I just finished putting on a longer flap today. It comes on the 2016 SKS's for anyone that doesn't want to fab there own. Will be trying it out tomorrow hopefully.

$31 plus 4 rivets for a total of $35. With me on the sled it sits about 1-2" off the ground so it should work really well

Not quite, the end 2 I had to redrill but the centers were close I just oblonged the hole in the flap and riveted it on.

Put another 40mi on today and can definitely say the flap helped. With the stock flap, outside temp of 8 degrees I made it 5mi before temps were 155. But the trails were hard. Today outside temp was 25, snow was looser and never had to drop the scratchers. Highest I seen was 145, averaging 138 or less. Speed seems to have a big factor in temps, under 25mph it starts to raise, pick up the pace and it cools off 5+ degrees. Flap is a must do for anyone with deep lug track and or stretched.
My setup is 136" cobra no studs (yet)
Tunnel protectors with holes drilled
I will get a better idea on how well it helped tomorrow as today's findings weren't the same temp and conditions. Forecast is 7 for a high so the trails should be just like they were when I tested the stock flap

I will disagree on the if you're extended/deep lug you need a longer flap. I run a 14 Indy 136" stock flap. I also run duraflex scratchers all the time. 95% under 130°. If I was running 138° I'd have my scratchers down. I run the stock flap so when you're playing off trail the snow shoots out and doesn't get trapped in the tunnel. So from my point of view and my personal experience. You're better off spending $50 on scratchers and leaving the stock flap. As compared to spending $35 on a flap then also spending $50 on scratchers just in case the trails are hard....

To me 138 isn't that hot. my sisters Indy 800sp with 121" completely stock with 20mi on it was also running 128-138 depending on speed today. My goal is not to rely on scratchers all the time so if a $35 flap can keep temps to what I feel is ok than that's a win to me. If I was seeing over 140s consistently then yes scratchers would be down but again that's me.

I redrilled the center 2 rivets. Then again with the tracks usa extention vs stock I prob would have redrilled the outter on the stocker so to keep the large holes in the flap mount closed.

 

Now that I think of it I had to trim the inside edges on the backside of the flap to get it to slide up to get the holes to line up. In my case the centers worked but the outers where just a bit off. I had the old flap on before it so I can't imagine them being too far off on a sled without a tunnel extension.

I believe XCR used emergency pull strap. You know like the ones in the sled tool kit.

 

I did the SKS flap as well. i pounded out the mounting flange so that the flap almost hits the back bumper. i was able to poke a hole in the middle of the flap and use the stock mounting bolt in the bumper. Not sure how long that will last but it seems to hold up pretty well so far. we'll see after i back into a few snow banks on my next trip lol.
