Snow and riding in Sweden

I had been posting about the snow conditions in Sweden in other threads, but they are mostly region specific and not general. So I'll just start my own thread...

They kept telling me, and still me, the stories of the great snow in November. Even most of December was great. But last week there was thaw. And now most of the snow is gone and the lakes are unsafe to ride...
I arrived last Friday and there was still thaw.

But now it's better. Yesterday it was -10 degrees C en now it's -20C.
Now some snow and I'm good to go.
Though I will ride this, what is left, if I have to.
I think it's actually OK for trails, though a very hard frozen top, but it is good as a base and to ride on.
But for my deep snow machine, it sucks!

I can't ride yet anyway, I need to replace my sliders, bought new original BRP ones.
Also need to adjust suspension and track tension. Hopefully this season the slides will not wear as fast.

Also hope for some good snow, and good riding. It'll come!
If not, I just love being here. Makes me relaxed and really be able to wind down.

I'll keep you lot posted.

what a world we live in . my area you are dodging white tail deer , occasional black bear. go north in to canada , you are dodging moose , and possibly wolves. now we see others that could possibly be dodging reindeer. what's next?

I went out riding for a bit.
Even on the trails the snow was deep. Even though it had rained a bit in the morning and it was thawing.
(Trails aren't groomed (only some). They mostly become firm due to being ridden on.)

Friend beside the trail got stuck... Me on the trail (so in the picture you see my sled).

Now it's freezing again and snowing!

Deep enough to get stuck in at least. Shallow enough to kick up dirt when you do. I hope we get some more still though.

This wasn't getting stuck, just tipping over. It's simple to put it back upright and we're going again. And it was only twice...
(The friend did get really stuck, but that's a different story.)
Oh and my dog always looks sad, like I don't feed her enough and not give her any love. She's the queen in begging other people for it.

You can't be stingy with the flipper in deep snow like that. Found you expend way more energy when riding in those conditions if you spare the throttle...at least when I once did a trip with long track rental sleds.
Your dog could use a happy meal.

Each larger town in the mountain regions generally has a snowmobile club, but that's mostly for administrative stuff such as trail grooming and land owner contracts. Actual riders clubs are quite rare I think? At least I don't have any experience in encountering one.

The bigger skiing areas usually have a quite substantial trail systems around them. I myself do a lot of riding around Vemdalen and Funäsdalen and think it's great! The snowmobile clubs around the skiing areas tend to be quite active since the skiing industry brings up a lot of tourists doing daytrips/safari trips on snowmobiles.

Snowmobile club in my area grooms the trails, does some maintenance on bridges and whatnot and organises a meeting every season. That's about it. Riders in my area are few and far between. For the type of riding I do I'm basically mostly by my lonesome (except for a few days every season when some buddies show up) which really limits what you can do and where you can go, at least if you take safety into account too.

I assume ski resorts are less fond of people on snowmobiles exploring the backcountry instead of sticking to the trails anyway.

We have a HUGE ski even here every year in February, this year over 15,000 skiers have signed up, I believe the main event is 23 miles long and they have their own snow making machines.

Today I went riding with a bunch of men from the neighbourhood. Is was 6 men and me.
It was a rough ride, deep snow on the trails, but a lot of fun.
All of us got stuck at least once.

Not counting the lunch break, we were out for 4 hours and managed to do 36 km...

For those interested: 5 Lynx (2x 49 Ranger, Xtrim, Boondocker & ?), 1 Ski-Doo (Freeride) + 1 Polaris (Titan).

I'm curious, where are you riding?

I live in Sweden and ride mostly around Östersund and Åkersjön, sometimes we go up to Ovikenfjällen. We have lots of snow everywhere, but the best riding is in march I think when it doesn't get dark so early. I ride trails mostly.

Picture 1 is from the trail running by my house a couple of days ago, picture 2 is from last spring a bit down the trail, picture 3 is some nothern lights.
Last picture was taken at the 25th of November. We got snow very early this season.

Great pics. Thanks for sharing. (y)
Jealous of that snow.

That last pic is postcard / poster / etc material.
Thanks, I can add another picture from the house, also some northern lights but the moon shines so bright, not as bright as the picture, the camera adds light even though the picture is taken at 9 PM.

Hoping for nice weather tomorrow so we can do some riding.

You didn't get in the picture?
Someone had to take the picture...

Nice pictures!
I ride quite close actually, near Strömsund.

Today I needed a break. Even though 2 people texted me if I wanted to go on a ride.
But then one of the two showed up at my door, with 2 buddies in tow. Of course I couldn't refuse.
But...
Then I had a DESS 'check key' failure. :(

Hopefully I get to take the sled to a dealer tomorrow and they are able to fix it (and it's not too expensive).
I will ask for a spare key (especially if the key is the problem, though I read the programming is done on the sled, not the key).
I do also wonder how and why this suddenly happened. Nothing changed from yesterday to today...

Try resetting things by disconnecting the battery for a bit first, see what happens. It's free and might resolve things.

Tried that, didn't help. Thanks.
Cameras and Cell phones have timers so everyone can get in the pictures.
Didn't have anything high up to set the cellphone in. And I'd be the one running (in deep snow) and not getting on time to the sled.
Maybe next time...
