Wow, I just heard 700 people gone from Xstrata? This isn't good, things better start to pick up soon or Sudbury is going to get really ugly really fast. I've been off since the end of December, there litteraly is no jobs in this city, well, not for a level 3 Heavy Equipment Apprentice lol. I'm trying to find a 3 in 2 out position, and even that, there doesn't seem to be any.

Very tough for sure ... especially right after Christmas when people are just now getting their bills in. One of my buddies worked for them .. he went in this morning .. was told at the door that his name wasn't on the "keep" list .. told him to grab his stuff and leave the property. Some guys with 10 years experience have been layed off.

I feel bad for all these guys ... there's going to be so many people goign bankrupt. My buddy bought a new house 2 years ago and is expecting a baby in July. With mortgage payments nearing $2000 a month for some of these guys , it's going to be ugly and sad.

As much as the Mayor of this city says that mining only plays a small role in this community , just wait and see what the trickle effect is going to do ... businesses will be hurting. That's 700 families being disrupted.

Ya, I dont care what he says, mining is Sudbury, since summer, almost every person I know my age that works in mining has been layed off. Theres a lot of people in the situation you talked about above, and I feel sorry for them, I dont know what I would do.

He must have been working for a contractor as none of the Xtrada employees were sent home yet. They will be layed off but not that quick. - Contractors are a different story.
I have been saying for months now that Sudbury is about 9-12 months behind the rest of the economy to feel the pinch. This downturn started in the spring and we are almost back and now we will feel it. Yes the conomy has slowed down over the last few months (Vale Inco shut down some operations and so did Xrtada) but now we will see it big time. Unlike the rest of the economy when things turn around it will be another 9-12 months before we get the turn around here - every time we have recession Sudbury feels it the same way. Looks good then wham - here we go again. The biggest factor this time is who owns these two mining giants. Used to be INCO and Falco - now it is two Internattional companies and nickel is just one of there lines - unlike a company that only produces one product they produce many so when the maket is down they will just shut that part down - nickel is at or below the break even point for them - so shut it down.

Glad I took my pension

I have a few friends that work for them and they've already been sent home. The link I'm posting is the press release.

Yep, the guys that were underground last night were called up to surface in the middle of their shift, and the guys showing up this morning never went underground.

Nope .. not working for a contractor .. working for Xstrata with 3 years of senoirity. His shift boss with 9 years was given the OK to go to Nickel Rim , where he is now working on a fork lift. My buddy had guys on his crew with 10 years under their belt and they were given their layoff papers. They shut down Craig , Thayer-Lindsey and Fraser is put on a maintenance only. Like I said , he showed up this morning at 7am for his shift ... they looked at a list , told him he wasn't on it and to grab his gear and leave the property.

This is a huge blow to our economy ... and this is just the beginning. Vale is next ... this summer is gunna be ugly.

Check out the Sudbury Star online .... there's a video with Dwight Harper of Mine Mill 598 CAW ... he says that is you are a Tradesperson hired before 1998 your job is OK ... Production worker hired before 2000 , you're OK ... anything after that , you're gone.

These lay offs are hurting everyone-I have a machine shop that supplies many parts for the mines and mining equipment-all the parts in this sector came to a stand still in October This recession will cut deep-we will all feel it some way

brother in law was turned away today....plus his uncle..shitty time for sure. I am also in the mining industry..but work for a company that has a pretty niche market...so hopefully I will survive the slow down.

My bros inlaw was sent home today too. 9yrs so he might be lucky

Good thing I left Sudbury IMO as the place I worked supplied Xtrata about 60%+ of our business was to them. I feel for the guys back home.[/b]

I really feel for these guys. This was a real shocker. Most times they gave you a few weeks or months notice -- this time wham - your gone. Also a few months ago you could pick up a job in a week - now there is nothing - every contractor is laying off.
Went through this in the 70's and again in the 80's - It is not fun. Makes a young family man turn grey in a hurry. Really have to sort out your priorities in a hurry and watch every penny. Things like snowmobiling, boating, gulf and warm vacations just need to be put on hold. Back in the 70's had to even drop my phone service as couldn't afford it. Today things like cable TV, cable high speed internet, cell phones etc would have to go.

On the other hand we at the STP will be looking for a good mechanic to go over our groomers and drags this summer - might give some young mechanic a few extra bucks. Let me know if you or someone you know is interested.

I might be interested if I'm still in Sudbury, I'm starting to get really bored doing nothing all day, so I'm trying to find a rotating shift position somewhere, any emergency repairs, even on the trail around now to get a busted groomer out of the bush, if you guys need somebody let me know.

I used to work for MacLean Engineering based in Collingwood with a service plant in Sudbury. I left in 2006, and just this past January 75 people were laid off. I was laid off from my job the week before x-mas from the auto industry, and I haven't found anything since.

This is going to hurt everyone in the long run, a total of over 100,xxx jobs lost in Ontario in the month of January. Best of luck to everyone

My how things change, for the worse. A few months ago the Toronto Star did an article comparing Windsor (highest unemployment rate in Canada I think) w/ Sudbury which was booming. Now w/ the US economy in the toilet, the affects are spreading.

The Americans aren't buying anything, the Chinese aren't making anything & the metals sector in Canada goes in the dumper too.

well atleast Ontario brought in another no smoking law instead of helping out places like sudbury
makes me sick and just tired of this bull
where is your bail out? or just some provincial help

hope things turn around real fast for you all[/b]
Weak ass government will not even move on the legal obligtion xstrata has not to layoff anyone until at least July, only 6 months but at least that would give a guy a chance to shore up the finances . This was agreed upon when the company was purchased 3 years ago. Bail out? fact is they just want to produce less nickel as it is still priced above cost to refine so they could make money just not enough, this way they can save money and drive prices higher eventually when supply runs low. People are never considered when large corporations look at the bottom line. One thing for sure the mines will always be here, at least they cannot outsource that or they would. I have not worked for a few months due to a health issue and it sure does deplete the cash fast, I feel for the guys that are just starting out and may carry large debt with a young family. Hopefully the BOC is correct and we see a turnaround in 2010.

Unfortunatley, the government can't dump money into everything to keep everyone employed. If a company isn't selling the product they make, they can't expect to rely on the govnerment to pay them continue to make it.

It'll turn around...

I work for Sandvik or should I say i did work for Sandvik mining and construction, I was a combination of shop and service technician. Since Xstrata did all the closing/lay-offs on Monday there was approximately 20 shop-service pple laid off yesterday at Sandvik and i was one of them, they did by seniority, hopefully things do pick up in the near future. the one thing about myself I am also licensed automotive technician so I am looking at work in the automotive field again.
