Interesting Question for a Yamaha tech/parts guy

Thank you if you take time to do so,, you'll find it interesting i'm sure :smilielol: (not bashing yamaha in any way),, just a co-worker has it stuck in his head that just because a certain part shares the same middle PART IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (type of part that it is), it will work in any application NO MATTER what the initial 3 digit model I.D. number is, ie;,, take for instance a base gasket # 40T-11351-00-00 ('84-'90 YZ490 models),, yet another number such as #1W1-11351-00-00 ('77 YZ250) will work in his mind BECAUSE they share the SAME MIDDLE DIGITS (which only refer to the # being a cyl base gasket),,but the 1W1- designation vs the 40T- designation clearly shows two different application where they WILL NOT WORK on the other application,,,,,, anyone want to add to this scenario?, I'd really appreciate some other Yamaha Parts Persons views to go along with this,,

Thank you, :beerchug:

BTW: I know I should have used sled p/n's, but these came to mind easier :frech32:

For sleds it's usually the first digits that denote the model year and then the middle number is the part.

These are all throttle cables. Notice only the begining is different. Do you also see where a 1998 part number is still the same in 2001. Yamaha cut and paste parts.

All of these parts are interchangable, if that addresses your question. I find most often if the middle number is the same it will work.

8CH-26311-00-00<1998 SX-700>
8CH-26311-00-00<1998 Mountain Max-700>
8ED-26311-00-00 < 2001 SXR-700>
8CR-26311-00-00 <1998 SX-600>

Excellent type of reply I was searching for,, this clearly shows how the prefix of 3 digits denotes how or what sled/bike/atv the particular number was designed for, yet the middle 5 digi's denote the part being a throttle cable

Now, lets take a CDI for instance,, p/n 8CR-85540-40-00 vs p/n 8CA-85540-00 (hypothetically), same 5 middle digits, DIFFERENT prefixes of origin,, this guy says that because the middle 5 digits are the same (identifying a CDI box) that they will work on either sled,,, now correct me if i'm wrong (which i'm sure i'm not), but the WHOLE REASON there is a different prefix to identify WHICH model it originated from is because of such inentities as different timing curves or wire harness hookups, also possibly digital CDI (85540) vs 85510 (non-digital I believe) with different 3 digit prefixes of I.D.,,,, :dunno: Am I wrong???,,

22 yrs of selling yamaha parts along w.honda/kawasaki/suzuki also have their way of identifying their own models also, and always there is some type of difference (no matter how subtle) to why each requires its own part I.D. designation

Thank you NY_SXR700 for validating my belief/knowledge of this system :div20: :beerchug:

Yamaha is one of the few I haven't had the chance to work with, but a lot of this comes down to how good your parts guy is. The good ones are few and far between. But maybe I just expect a lot after being a parts guy myself for going on 15 years. (13 in the powersports business and two in heavy equipment)

:div20: the issue here is that I am the parts guy,, and he is a drunken old tech that thinks he is right because he owns and bench races yamahas at the local bars that he knows it all :lol2:,,, truth be told, if he spent as much time wrenching as he does driving to the local tim hortons for coffee and b-s'ing w/others, he'd get more accomplished around here :smilielol:

All of these parts are interchangable, if that addresses your question. I find most often if the middle number is the same it will work.

8CH-26311-00-00<1998 SX-700>
8CH-26311-00-00<1998 Mountain Max-700>
8ED-26311-00-00 < 2001 SXR-700>
8CR-26311-00-00 <1998 SX-600>[/b]
Those cables quoted above may WORK for different applications, but I assure you they are different cables. Probably slightly different lengths, they all three have different retail prices, too. Every throttle cable for every Yamaha snowmobile has the same 5 numbers in the middle- 26311. Those numbers mean nothing as far as what it fits or interchanges with, they simply denote that the part in question is a throttle cable.Yamaha calls these three numbers the "Basic Code Number"
82M-26311-00-00 fits a 1998 Phazer.
8X6-26311-00-00 fits a 1995 V-Max
810-26311-00-00 is for a 1972 GP643
And I'm sure you know none of these three examples will work on any of the sleds you gave as examples.

In a word, no.
It's all about the prefix.
Yamaha calls the prefix (XXX) the " Model Code Number". Every model in each Yamaha product line is assigned a model number to identify that particular model. All component parts are given the model code number relating to the model on which they were FIRST used. For instance, a 1998 Phazer cable is part number 82M-26311-00-00. The prefix 82M tells us that this cable was first used on the 1991 Exciter 2. The prefix is your only source of part number interchange in the Yamaha part number system.

Great point Jerry. Yamaha is funny about part numbers for sure. Some parts depending on what they are are the same but often more than not just because the middle number is the same that doesnt mean they are the same because they usually arent or like you said are somewhat or way diffferent.
