most of the vintage maintance would remain the same , but i think your goal on the ponies is a little high

 

That’s honestly just fine, I was just curious and trying to remember from back in the day. It might be a decent sled to keep around as some of the neices and nephews get older. I can look it over like any other used sled, just curious if there is anything in particular that was common, a certain part in the rear skid, engine issues, or whatever.

 

I think front ski bushing had issues ,, 583 was a good motor ,, boogie wheels fall off is all I can remember,

 

583 is similar to Poo's 500, millions of them out there, they make decent power and they run forever if you do the maintenance. S chassis was reliable and rode good for its time. Clean the carbs, check the bearings, change the chaincase oil, grease it and ride it!

Regular maintenance just like any sled vintage or year.
Those sleds are a bit heavy. They aren't the greatest or worst for ride or handling.
On a great note. Those are some of the most reliable engines in the industry. Excellent engines.
Be sure to use ski doo oil. Preferably mineral oil. Those engines seem to be designed around the use of there own oil.
All in all there great reliable sleds. However like anything, reliability is only as good as the previous care it had.

 

I may end up with a late 90s formula 583, the sled has been sitting alot for the last few years, but ran last snaptube vidmate season and doesn’t appear to have anything wrong with it. I am not a ski doo guy, and especially unfamiliar with stuff of this vintage. It is an S chassis, late 90s or so and I am not sure wether I am best keeping it as spare/kids sled or parting it out or selling it. Are there any common issues other than basic old sled stuff to look for? I would assume the 583 would make around 105hp, does that sound about right?

it typically produces around 95-100 horsepower, so your estimate of around 105hp is in the right range.
