800 switchback 2010 ECU fail what do I do now ? Burn it? Revive it? Any help would be great. Full story below.

Hello thanks for any help on this. I lived back in Indiana where I bought the sled ran great for the 700 miles I put on it back there, kinda sat last winter since there was no snow there, went on one trip w it once. Then this year I moved to crested butte Colorado kinda a last min decision. Even though its not made for out here I've taken it out 4 times was great the first 2 trips I get stuck but I get out, even with a ripsaw track. Anyway the 3rd time out we had some fresh snow, it was a blast jumpin on trails to get momentum then peelin off into some powder and flyin off some kicker. Mid way through the day the little battery symbol starts flashing and the battery meter starts dropping till it becomes dead and the dash all shuts down(I knw it doesn't have a battery but that's what it does) Runs a little funny bogs here and there but still would run. If u turned it off let it sit and restarted it, it was fine for another couple miles and would do it again. Made it home and let it sit for a week hoping something got wet or just some random problem (I was dreaming). Took it out 3 days ago same thing happened. Took it to a shop yesterday they did test and said the ECU was not responding and was bad ?? So do I buy a new ecu do I sell the dam thing even though I still owe 5 G's on it?, trade it in?, I love the sled, was about to set it up for the mountains but am now looking at spending the money on fixing the dam thing. What do I do? If I fix it is it just goin to happen all over or will it hold up?:wall:

Tell the shop you want a guarantee that its the ECU and you want it in writing! Also, ask them why it burned up. I wouldn't accept a, "it just went bad" explaination. Because if there is something that caused it and it's not fixed, you might end up with another fried ECU. If they will put their money where their mouth is then have them fix it. You'll take a big hit on trade for a non-running machine. Ride it for the remainder of the season, then sell it in Sept/Oct.

Thanks for the help guys, yeah I asked them y it happened they didn't sound to sure that's y I'm here I don't trust any shop guy unless he's my brother (I don't have a brother). They said something about the voltage meter I guess it has a tendency to send miss readings or something, that could have cause it??? I don't really wanna get rid of the sled for that reason (ill take a big loss on it) and I like it besides what has happened recently. So I guess what I really wanna know is if someone else has had the problem and if there is a sure fix to it or I'm just gonna keep burnin up ECU's. the only reason I think about trading is because I could get a mountain sled that's already set up, cause I'm gonna have to spend almost a grand to get it set up right

If the Voltage regulator is gone then that will burn down the ECU. The can test the Voltage regulator so I would get them to do that. If there is another more reputable/experienced dealer in your area or even within a reasonable drive, i would be looking elsewhere.

i know it sucks, but thank god you don't have a cat or doo and have this happen. and it does. 03 fire cat 600 ecu $1600. doo 09 e-tec $2000. this is oem from dealer retail. most ecu failures on new poo sleds is from the voltage reg. being bad. but i had one this season that had corrosion in one plug at the ecu. and the burn spot on the back was on that side. but also the stator being bad can take out both the reg. and ecu.they better find the root of problem or it will happen again.

ecu

This was a well known problem on the 09 800.

The 2010's were better but it was not uncommon for VR probs on these as well. It is usually the VR that fries the ECU.
As far as I know the ECU itself is not/was not the problem.

Stator probs were rare on the 800's. A much bigger problem on earlier 600's but the 800 hasn't had much stator probs.

The rest of the sled is pretty damn good (cooling and fuel mapping aside which can be addressed).

Loose or wet connections in the cfi harness anywhere can cause this problem, check those.

As for what to do.....yer call.

I would confirm there are no harness/connection issues, either by yourself or someone competent.
Next check the entire harness for frayed or damaged wiring.
Comon areas for issues here on the D8 were under the airbox and under the motor.....they were routed poorly on several production runs....there was a tech bulletin on it at one point....frayed or damaged harness wiring WILL fry the VR or ECU.
Then I'd buy a new VR and ECU.....Never buy a used solid state component especially one that has known problems....chasin yer tail there.

OR burn it OR flog it off as is and take yer beating

Good luck....been there.
