Ski-doo had a specific reason for their engine design, first it was due to the new design of the ZX chassis. To be able to mount the motor as low as possible to gain very low CG they required a cylinder reed design. This reed design actually feeds both a portion of the air/fuel mixture to both the case and directly into the transfer ports. The reason CAT uses the case reed, at least on the F chassis is due to the location of the same side exhaust/intake, plus for the design team it is a proven intake track design, The cylinder reed design does not provide any increase horse power advantages, but on the Ski-Doo chassis design it allows for lower engine mounting. Yamaha has the similar design on their V-max series of twin cylinder motors in the mid 90's.
