The 120 xcr i bought for my kids has an adjustable main jet, they said it was stock and didnt, or forgot to mention the adjustable jet, thats fine by me but i wish they would have told me about it. The guys i got it from at haydays had a bunch of 120s from Stock to full mod, so they may have the sled tuned, it seems to run good so far but she is gong to want to go faster pretty soon. After basic tuning and track tension what are the next steps? I dont want to grenade a motor, so i am think g to leave the govenor and gear it up?

Another option i was wondering about would be to tweak the govenor up a little. Can this be done without much risk? If i could bump it up a couple hundred rpm rather than remove it i would consider that, any thoughts?
What is a typical speed for a stock 120?

I wouldn't mess with the internals in regards to the governor. These engines can only rev so high in stock form.
What speed is it running now?
Stock they only do 8mph. With a gear change and governer spring removed they do 14mph.
IMO I wouldn't dump any money into a stock motor. There's a couple options for aftermarket in the form of the Honda GX 200 and the Briggs Animal.

If your looking for a gx200 I've got a pretty well built one I'm going to sell as soon as I take it out if the sled

A lot cheaper then all the upgrades to a 120 then still buy a bigger engine

Gear change is a must, regardless what motor you have in it. a 4:10 ratio is still a 4:10 ratio. More power will just get her there faster. Depends on what type of usage its seeing would depend on what you may want to do with it.

One of ours is Now classified as "improved stock" we are in the lower 3.xx :1. We take the internal governor plastic gear out right away. They start to float the valves around 7200 rpm on the stand. I haven't seen much over 6600 on ours after he is done on the track. Be it grass drags or snocross.

But again it all depends on what your doing. New Gearing is essential to speed. Chassis tuning as well. REC has a nice write up on what to do to gain a couple mph just out of a stock sled.

Like others have said there are cheaper ways to hp then through the stock 120, and the 4cycle central guys were just looking to buy stock 120 motors..
