I recently purchased a xlt that I was told was a 95. the tunnel has a manufactured date of 01-11-1994, and the hood has a 40 year anniversary tag 1954-1994. So the sled appears to be a 1994 xlt special. However the engine has individual black cyl. heads (not the mono head) with "polaris 600" cast in each one. Is this engine from a different year, and been transplanted? I need to go through this sled, but need to know what it is before I can prepare it for a ride.

pictures help and the sleds are made a year earlier than their actual year so its a 95 as for the engine i am not sure

The one one the left is a '94 580. The one on the right is a '95 600. The 95 has the 40th decal on it as well. The engine you have is out of an '80s indy 600. 580 and 600 XLT and XCR motors say XLT on them. There is a case reed Individual cylinder 96-97 xcr 600 motor with pink head covers and no lettering

Any Polaris dealer can verify the year by running the VIN stamped in your tunnel. The engine you describe is an old Indy 600 made from 1983- 1987, a good engine with parts still available.

My digital camera isn'nt working, or I'd post pics. I'm sure the hull and body are a 94, but don't know about the engine. The engine model # is EC60PL-02 and motor # is 83-01155. I've done searches and contacted the dealer, but the #'s seem to be of no help. I'm thinking it's an 87 motor, from looking at pics. It has a chrome water pump cover, and the coils are mounted on the pto side of the block, instead of the airbox.

It's an '83 engine according to the motor number you stated. Any dealer should have been able to tell you that. I think the '83s did not have oil injection.

the sled is a 1995 XLT special 48'" stance from the research I've done. The motor is in the 80's. Are all the 80's 600 triples the same? What's the difference between the 80's and 90's triple 600's besides the cyl. head(s)? Are there major differences in performance, or reliability?

Well. if the one on the left is a '94, it has a '93 hood on it. Those graphics are a '93 model year.
