What's the procedure for rebuilding the pump? I've been able to find parts lists but not a whole lot of info on what to do to get it apart and get the new parts in. My '97 XCR600 is on 4500 miles and I don't know if the pump was ever rebuilt (traded an XLT for it last year). I also heard something about checking the weep hole for coolant to tell if it needs to be rebuilt, where is this located?

Thanks!

Weep hole

The weep hole is at the bottom of the pump on the side facing the mag side of the engine. Don't wait for it to start dripping coolant to rebuild the pump. It's not there to indicate time to rebuild-it's there to show that a seal has already failed!
My pump went at 2300 miles, but high calendar time. The coolant got into the case, vaporized, and basically washed all the oil from the cylinder walls, scoring the mag and center pistons. Fortunately, the cylinder walls themselves were OK. Cost me a full engine rebuild, and of course the pump as well. The center crank bearings were notchy, too, but I can't say for certain that the coolant caused that, since the carb needles/seats leaked and I know fuel had gotten down there.
These are all well documented issues with XCR/Ultra triples. Some money spent up front on preventive maintenance pays big dividends in major repairs and grief avoided!

I have mine all apart and cleaned up but waiting on parts. The bearing totally shit the bed. I know I have to put Loctite on the impeller bolt but do I have to put anything on the sealing surfaces of the mechanical seal? Ive heard to use a small amount of dish soap but I just want to be sure.

i use a light touch of grease dish soap like dawn would work also just some initial lubrication to give the seal plate and mech seal some seat time!

My pump shit the bed on the trail today. It's squirting from the bottom. Lots of steam in the exhaust. I assume that means it was getting in the motor? exactly 3500 miles.

hey roger , need to what signs there r for pump to wreck crank bearings

Crank Bearings?? or Water Pump Bearings??

Water Pump Bearings you can typically feel bad bearings by manually rolling the gear on the pump.

The Pump if bad can let coolant in to the crank case and sitting coolant on bearings is bad and can cause them to go bad.

But if caught in short time I would lubed down the crank and you could be all set

Crank Bearings is an inspection with a tear down.
