Triton axle issues - how to fix or do I need to replace?

Hi everyone,

I recently bought a used 1998 Triton single place snowmobile trailer. I noticed that one side needed the grease seal replaced, but I didn't think it was a big deal.

I tore apart the hubs to clean the bearings, inspect, and repack with grease. Much to my dismay, the drivers side axle has been damaged pretty bad, like there was a previous bearing failure, and they kept dragging it along. It wore down the piece that sticks out and the bearings ride on, and the point where the grease seal rides has 1/8" worn down. It looks like the previous owner just gobbed JB weld in there to build it up so that the grease seal had something to ride on. Well, needless to say, that has fallen out, and I am left with a mess.

So, can I replace just that spindle somehow? Or am I looking at buying the whole damn axle now?

I have a trip out to the Black Hills of South Dakota in 2 weeks, and I am kind of freaking out now. I bought this trailer to haul out there, and now I find this..

What are my options? Advice? Where to go to find used axles maybe??

Ugh.

Thanks

A while back, we borrowed a Triton trailer and because of terrible roads and a hell-bent driver, we broke a spindle off and ground down what was left, into a sewing needle!

We didn't want to return the trailer with a mash up of parts, so we flat-bedded the mess home and along the way, one of the sled dealers had a Triton sign out front. We dropped it there and he ordered in a new torsion axle and had it ready the next weekend.

You may not want to buy a new axle from Triton, but any dealer should be able to get one in time for your trip. You can always check the TSC or Princess Auto for a torsion stub to weld on to your axle..... or maybe a complete DIY spring or torsion axle setup maybe as cheap or cheaper?

thanks for the post!

Yup, looks like that is what happened here as well. The hubs dont match either, but have the same offset for the rims.

This model is a LT 4.5 x 10 according to the sticker.

Looks like I will be calling around for an axle. This 500 dollar trailer is turning into a nightmare. I have to fix some wiring, and I have bought all new LED lights becuase a couple were burnt out.

thoughts on Hannarv.com?

that is a good idea. There is one about 40 minutes away
also, looking at this thing, the two spots where the bearings ride are ok. The bigger issue is the area where the grease seal rides. That is really the issue. I am wondering if there is a sleeve that can be put over it, and use a smaller grease seal maybe? I'm looking for creative ideas with this as buying a new axle isn't really in the budget...

I called a trailer shop in town, and the only thing they could recommend was to get a sleeve for the area where the seal rides. He has some for marine use, so after work I am going to go check that out.
I agree, a new axle is more than the trailer is worth, and hence my frustration with this! haha

well, that didn't pan out.

I found what's called a speedi-sleeve, which installs over the damaged area. Looks like Napa has a p/n of NOS 99149 for the one I need, for $50! Anyone have experience with these? Is it work the cost?? Do you RTV seal this thing in place?

what is a wicking grade loctite? Is that an autocorrect?

Just picked up the speedi-sleeve tonight as well as the loctite. Looks like everything should play well together, I test-fit the sleeve on the shaft, and the grease seal on the sleeve. Should work great. I just need to clean up the old JB Weld crap off the shaft, and then clean it up so the new JB Weld and loctite have something to stick too.
On install, I am going to put JB Weld on the shaft, then locktite, and put the sleeve on. Then I am going to install the bearings and hub right away so that the grease seal helps locate the sleeve where it needs to be. Does that sound like a good plan?

Does either the JB Weld or Loctite need to be above freezing to work properly? Anybody know?
