I am in the market for a new or good used truck to tow my 3 place R&R alum. trailer...getting rid of my 2000 dodge/360cu/4:10 gears, it pulls the hell out of the trailer, but does not go by many gas stations! looking at the chevys 5.3 maybe!?!?

I think it has more to do with the 360 than it does the gears. They have been making that engine for a long time and it has always been thirsty.

Chevy 5.3 does not make very good low end torque, more of a high horsepower engine. Need to spin the snot out of it to make any power....high rpm = poor fuel economy. If you want a 1/2 ton truck I would get a 5.4L Ford. Good low end torque, keeps the engine speed down. The GMC 6.0L does well on fuel but you will need to step up to a 3/4 ton truck....then it is best to go with the Diesel...$$$$. I love my Ford PowerStroke Diesel, tons of pulling power and ~17MPG towing. You need to make your decision on what your truck will be primarily used for. If it tows 80% of the time go with higher gear ratio for the extra torque multiplication, otherwise stay away from high gear ratios.

My F150 supercrew with a 5.4L gets 11mpg pulling 2 F7s in a 7'x 21' aluminum enclosed trailer. 70+ miles per hour, plenty of power.

If you have to go up any hills or mountains dont even think about the 5.3!! Been there done that! Also the 6.0 is a waste too. I know I have one. Spend the extra cash and get the 8.1 or duramaxx with the allison. Those are much better!!!!!!!!

May I suggest you talk to my good friend MACK!!!

Other wise I`d say Ford because thats my Favorite.

I`ve used a 6.0 chev pulling 3 sleds on a Flow Aluminum. W/ to haul on I didn`t know they were there. Also We drove from Houghton to Red Wing MN on 1 tank of fuel. I think its about 360 miles. Thats damn good.

Also I used a 2002 Dodge Turbo Diesel pulling a enclosed car trailer that weighed about 3000 plus 5 sleds. Plenty of power, but a shift happy tranny, and fuel milage was about 10-11 with NO.1 fuel.

I`d tell you about my 4.6L ford but I`m busy putting gas in it. I love the truck so much I spend all my money on gas.

Get a new 1500hd for a three place and if you want you can pull a four place with heavy polaris's on there. this truck is a great truck and pulls good. the first thing i would do is get dual exhaust and k&n filtter. Getting around 12 pulling a four place trailer loaded going 80mph.

GREAT TRUCK
