I just bought a used Cat w/studded track. My question is can I remove the studs and still use the track or should I just leave the studs in or buy a new track?
Yes, you can remove the studs and still use that track. I never been a huge fan of studs I've seen my buddy's throw studs through heat exchangers many times.
Yes you can remove the studs and not hurt the track at all. But why would you want to? Give them an honest try. Once you realize the benefits of them, you won't ride without them.
If you ride aggressively, you WILL put a stud through a heat exchanger; it's a matter of time. Even if you check them annually, tighten, replace bent ones, etc.
Listen, I've dragged raced on grass and ice for over 50 years, & I trail ride very aggressively, never ripped out a stud. Angle backers make a major difference to prevent that from happening.
I have plywood on the garage floor, and use a hi-wheeled dolly to move the sleds around.
