Took a jaunt up there earlier in the week, and they'd been shoosting snow for a few daze already. I ventured up again this afternoon, and they had taken several of the cannons out of the loop, and kept on adding to the now almost fifteen to 20' high banks of snow. The blowing snow was pretty saturated and almost wet this afternoon. I went home, and then remembered I had this new cheapo drone, and thought I'd get a try at another vantage point, but by the time I got back up there, they'd shut the cannons off since the daytime temps were approaching 30°. They have moved the other cannons over to build some base for the rest of the hill/ski slopes, so I would imagine they will still be adding some to the race venue, but the pressure to make enough to hold the race, as in previous years, is off. It's off to a great start!!

I watch on live stream from here in Quebec. It's nice to see the snow making is going well. Appreciate your updates. Going to be interesting this year with all the brand jumping and guys moving up. Bring I think on.

Lutsen is sposed to open a handful of runs next weekend.
I wish Lutsen would get with the times and set up for night skiing. At least the Caribou Express runs or something. They way it is now its $80+ apiece for lift tickets then by 3:30 they're chasing us back to the main side for closing time.

This is what it looks like today. All the snowmakers are blowing on other slopes, no more left along the race course. The snow is hard, and dense, I barely left footprints where I walked.

My wife wants me to take her to Bentleyville this year. I'll bet you can see it quite well from Spirit Mountain on race weekend. :buttrock:

Bentleyville is a terrific area of festivity, but it is quite a ways from Spirit, over five miles, and far enuff away to only pick out just a few things. They change and add to the display a little bit every year, and it already has over 5 million lights. It is in the running for an award for being the top display in the U.S. It gets congested around the Park, many walk over the 5th A.W. viaduct near downtown a few blocks and some take the shuttle buses, which make the rounds from several of the area hotels. Parking is a cluster, especially on weekends.

If anybody wants to vote, check this website out: https://www.10best.com/awards/travel/best-public-holiday-lights-display-2019/bentleyville-tour-of-lights-duluth-minn/share/

With the recent rain, and warm daytime temps, I think they decided to get a couple more overnite blasts of snow onto the race area. Not really sure if it added (or lost) a whole lot from the views I got today, the top layer of about an inch thick was a fairly solid ice layer where tracked machines had broken thru. I saw the bleachers have not yet arrived as of this morning, the overhead lites are staged in the parking lot. Racing starts just under a week from today, I would think the crews will begin to transform the snow into a nice course. Looks like they are gonna be running the "Abyss" start again this year, not really sure what the top will entail, though. Getting excited!!

From today:

As a side note, I thought being able to see Bentleyville from up here, it's gonna be real hard to actually see anything. The "Tour of Lights" officially opens today, and runs until the weekend after Christmas.

:racetrk::racetrk::snowfall:Our track staff meeting was tonight. Got to have a beer with D-rail---- BUT, where was Zambroski?

BTW, there should not be a shortage of snow this year for Spirit Mountain.

One minute you could see then the next, a big blast of wind and snow would kick up. Races were shortened, then they decided to pull the night races, and get thru the afternoon. Visibility got real bad though, and racers had a few more crashes.. the last one today' was a very difficult one to watch, the snowbikes churned up a lot more dust, and even though the high winds would carry the dust off the track, it became a constant blur. The local buses were gonna stop running, as forecasts said the area was due for 24" in addition to 30 mph constant winds gusting over 45.
