I purchased a 2014 900ace GSX for an upgrade for my 14 year old daughters trusty 550 Super Sport M-10. The GSX has super low miles and looks like it just came off the showroom floor. It has 96 picks up the center. The sled is super quiet and smooth and handles great on the trails. If anything the steering feels a little to "low"effort. Overall very impressed and just have to get used to fly by wire throttle after a lifetime of 2 stroke's.
Now the not so good. The lake I live on has about 8" of snow over the ice and after this last little mixed bag with a little rain it has a light crust (not even strong enough to walk on without falling through. When the GSX gets out of another machines tracks into this 8" of snow it starts to get into a really bad head shake! One ski will dip down and then the other and the bars will fight back and forth. I didn't push it but it felt like if I went any faster I could get high sided off the sled! I have three other sleds and tried to see if any would do the same thing and none did so not just weird snow conditions. I have been riding for many years and have never experienced this violent head shake. In fact the closest I have ever felt it was when I almost lost it on a couple of sport bikes I had when you loose traction in both tires but the rear has more traction than the front and begins to wobble hard!! No fun.
I noticed the GSX ski's are narrower than my other sleds and obviously different but cant believe people would live with this. Has anyone run into this before? Is it a suspension set up issue? Any experience or input would be appreciated.

I will look up the toe measurements for sure and check. Nothing bent/damaged in front suspension, like I said looks brand new. Thanks, any other issues you guys can or have seen that might explain this?

On the trails does the sled handle great?

Probably the weight of the 4 stroke motor the narrow skis plus the thin ice layer crust combination.

It would be interesting if someone in your area has the same sled to see if its the model or just your sled.

I agree it would be great to try another one and see but hard to imagine this would fly with most 900ace owners. Handles great on trail with lower steering effort than my 18 XCR Switshback 800. All I can imagine is my daughter swinging out wide in a field or clearing at speed and getting tossed:mad:

Yeah, that can screw up any sleds handling. I've had perfectly set up and handling sleds almost throw me with crusty lake ice.

Not much of a "crust" not even enough to keep my dogs from falling through, but you may be right. Thing is I tried three other very different sleds in same conditions/time and they rode like I would expect? In all my years of riding, I have never gotten this on or off trail before. Any other sled would have started to lean in direction of low ski and stay that way until you shifted your weight and then lean the other way, but not go back and forth.

I'd check ski alignment , and make sure all bushings on front suspension are in good condition, NO slop
4 stroke are sure heavier up front, so that will play into things, but I don;t think there should be head shake in a BAD way here, if other sleds riding same stuff don't have it
also, how is the wear on the carbides, does it look like its even wearing, or wearing more in the front or rear of carbide?

Will do, ski alignment/toe sounds high on the list. Will check entire front suspension but no kidding its like just out of the rapper LOL. Shimming the ski's on Polaris's makes a big difference in darting, are these Ski Doo's the same? Although darting isn't what concerned me.

Not sure what ski is on that sled but on my 17 Enduro with TS ski, I had a handling problem and then I noticed the skis were on the wrong side. The ski has a deeper keel on one edge of the ski and it should have been on the outside. Changed them and it was a world of difference.

I have not heard of many Ski Doos needing to be shimmed. None of the 4 of mine that I have owned have. I would make sure the toe out is correct.

I have not heard of many Ski Doos needing to be shimmed. None of the 4 of mine that I have owned have. I would make sure the toe out is correct.

I was hoping the toe measurements were in the owners manual - nope. Does anyone have the specs from a repair manual so I can check?

1/8 inch total toe out seems to be the general rule on most sleds, anybody agree or have input? Thanks

I used a straight 2X8 to line up with track and use as a constant to measure. Both ski's were toe'd in! Reset them toe out 1/8" and added some preload to the front track shock (was on the lowest). Way, way better! Plan on putting some Woody's slim jim dually's on it and it should be perfect for my daughter.

Makes me think the reason the first owner sold such a mint low milage sled was because it handled soooo badly, to bad.
