Needle nose pliers to remove the springs, but if you are going to put the rope in yourself, do not take the recoil apart. Just take it off (5 10mm bolts) and thread the rope in with needle nose pliers. A little easier said than done but a whole lot better than tring to put the recoil back together. If you are going to replace the rope buy some spectre cord. See my post under rope fixes in the forum for info.
