N.H. Snowmobile Association Sets Up Recovery Fund for Injured Dogsledder

CONCORD, N.H. -- The New Hampshire Snowmobile Association has established a recovery fund to provide assistance for dogsled driver Stephen Hessert of Cumberland, Maine, who was seriously injured in a hit-and-run snowmachine accident in Berlin on February 15. The association is also offering a $5,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the person or persons who struck Stephen Hessert. Co-workers and friends of Hessert already have pledged a $10,000 reward.

"This incident was a criminal action, not at all typical of the average snow machine operator," said Gail Hanson, executive director of the New Hampshire Snowmobile Association. "By setting up this fund, we want to demonstrate our deep concern for Stephen Hessert and our outrage at the irresponsible rider who struck him and left the scene."

The assistance fund will be used to help defray Hessert's medical expenses and assist him during his recovery. Hessert's condition is currently stabile, but he has undergone multiple surgeries on his legs and faces a lengthy period of rehabilitation. Contributions to the recovery fund for Stephen Hessert may be sent to: Gail Hanson, Executive Director, N.H. Snowmobile Association, 722 Route 3A, Suite 14, Bow NH 03304-4010. For more information on the fund, call (603) 224-8906.

"This generous gesture reflects the deep concern felt by responsible snow machine operators at this reckless criminal act," said Capt. Tim Acerno of the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. Acerno says that officers continue to follow leads in the case; no arrests have been made.

Anyone with information on the case should call N. H. Fish and Game's dispatch center at (603) 271-3361 or the N.H. State Police at (603) 271-3636.
