Snowmobile death: Woman was hauling microwave

STAFF REPORTS
Observer-Dispatch
The Virginia woman who died Sunday while driving her snowmobile in the Stillwater region may have lost control of the sled while carrying a microwave oven on the steering column, authorities said Monday.
Sandra D. Thompson of Blacksburg, Va., 53, died instantly after she ran into a 2-to 3-inch tree limb at a curve off Stillwater Road about 1 p.m., Town of Webb police and Herkimer County Coroner Dan Rivet Jr. said.
The microwave, which Thompson and her husband had acquired a short time before, may have shifted and hit the snowmobile's throttle, causing an acceleration toward the trees, Rivet said.
Thompson's husband, Ronald, was driving ahead of her and turned around just after the accident, he said.
"She was not traveling at a high rate of speed and there was no alcohol involved," Rivet said. "It was just a horrible, terrible tragedy."
The site was about three miles from the Lewis County line, police said. The two were heading east; they were renting a seasonal cottage in the Inlet area, Rivet said.
Thompson was pronounced dead at the scene and taken to the Lewis County General Hospital by the county Search and Rescue Ambulance. An autopsy was being conducted at Good Samaritan Hospital in Watertown. No official cause of death was available.
Other than a short news release, Town of Webb police could not be reached for further information. Police said the investigation is continuing.
This is the third snowmobile fatality in Herkimer and Oneida County in this young season:
There were three snowmobile fatalities last season in the Oneida-Herkimer-Lewis counties area.
