EPS Conversion

Now that the parts diagram for the 2022 T-Cat with EPS is up, curiosity has kicked in as to the possibility of updating previous years models with it. I am currently sitting on a 2019 that is fully updated to the 2020 suspension upgrades; like most tuned with afr/boost gauging etc etc, plus the labor to install everything, and in excellent condition with only 1350 miles on it. The cost of updates, mods, not to mention what it would cost to buy a 23 T-Cat; justifying letting it all go for EPS...not happening!!...especially since I'll be turning 61 very soon and building another one is not something I'm excited about as in the younger years. However, the age thing makes me think I'd like having the EPS.

The parts diagram shows all the brackets that hold the steering column in non EPS models to be the same. The EPS motor being part of the column looks to have two brackets added to hold it and, the column assembly is split between the upper section to the bars, the motor, and couplers down to the same mount brackets as non EPS. The front panel is a new part number which may have changed for mounting holes for 2 new brackets holding the motor???? Other change considerations would be powering the motor (wire harness) and is the motor controlled by the sleds ECM???....both could pose the biggest challenge to getting it in there at a reasonable cost. And nothing is reasonably priced when it come to sleds lol!!!!

Certainly others must be wondering if it can be upgraded to past sleds. Maybe someone in the know or with connections at Cat can chime in on what it would take to convert to the EPS.

I watched that video the other day and wondered if his use of the word boost with the EPS is just a chosen word he used because of the sled being turbo charged and he thought it would elevate the presentations hype?? Certainly there's no turbo boost involved with EPS. But I totally agree the EPS must be in the loop with the ECM and it probably varies the amount of force the motor applies at different speeds. More force at slower speeds...less at higher.

Looks like a nice kit, but… On back order like everything else. 🤷🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️ I’d just order a new sled with EPS and be done with it, unless you want a project to work on. 👍🏼

I agree the word boost was used like force. My understanding about GSE is it is constant power. I would think this is not optimal. In my riding, I find that balance is hard to achieve. I want allot of downforce for high speed but that makes low speed very heavy. Power steering is the solution. New sled may be your best option.

I had the GSE kit on my 20 and its certainly better than stock. I did ride an Apex in 2011? when they came out with the power steering. That is designed for more power assist at low speed and then cuts out after 40 or 50mph I believe. I'm guessing the new sleds will be like this and that's why I ordered a new one as well. Long days become a lot easier especially when you have back issues.

So my wife wanted to try the EPS on her 19 TCat and this GSE kit came quickly and was installed this week. My buddy who installed it said its a “really nice quality kit” and it went in without a hitch. The directions steps are all pictured and described clearly. Quality components.

I rode it about 100 yard around his field just to see before loading it in the trailer. I did a figure 8 to see what the effort is now, It is impressive and made it effortless. Look forward to a real ride.

When sitting still and sled off in his driveway….there is now more play in the bars. This is due to the steering post going thru the electric PS motor. Start the sled and the motor play firms up but still some more play than stock. The EPS ATV’s Ive seen are similar. When riding it at slow speed I felt none of that….just fun and easy steering. Zero noise back from the skis which is really slick.

It will be a curve to get used to it like any new sled. It really does feel like a new sled. Hopefully she will stick with this sled longer now and save us some cash in the long run. LOL

I will post back the higher speed results when winter starts to cooperate.

I have lots of experience with the GSE kit. I also have 150 miles on my 22 Tcat with EPS. The factory kit is awesome with NO compromises. The GSE kit overall is very good, but I felt I had to modify it to work for me

I have had both. Started with the BOP system and found for the easiest position I lost too much turning space. For aggressive riding I found it not to be comfortable. For many leisurely riders I think it could be a good option.
I then went with the GSE kit. This worked well. However having rode an APEX in 2011 when the power steering first came out I always in my mind was comparing to this set up. While I am still waiting for my TCAT to come I'm expecting it to be like that 2011 Yamaha set up and that was an awesome set up. If you never rode with Power before there is a slight learning or adjustment period to get use to the way it now handles. Got to remember to not push hard on the bars in the corners as it will turn very easily and you may be side ways.

I am interested in this conversion as well. The GSE kit doesn't appeal to me due to the negatives mentioned above.
I priced out the parts from arctic cat to be around $1600 USD. IF an ECU and wiring harness is needed, add another $1200.

The EPS unit itself is back-ordered of course. It says that it's "pre-programmed " which I Translate to the amount of boost that it gives at various speeds. So it obviously needs to be connected to a speed sensor of some sort which I imagine goes to the ECU. The only speed sensor I know of is the one on the chaincase. I would think that feeds into the ECM which then sends a signal to the EPS unit. I would love to get actual pictures of the unit with hood off at some point and the wiring etc.

I have a 2019 which I love and have done all the fixes and upgrades to make it bulletproof. Difference between what I can get for mine vs buying new is like $10k! Plus I would have to swap everything over (need mountain seat, need better track on top of all the other mods I have done). 10k is hard to swallow!
