Hello All,
I have a new Bullet Hybrid 7x16 arriving this fall and it will be parked outside. Wondering what the best anti theft system is. I'm thinking a quality coupler lock and both locked tire chocks.

My area is pretty quiet and safe, lots of people with trailers outside so I'm not overly concerned but just want to protect my investment.

Thanks

I use a coupler lock. It keep the honest people honest. If someone really wants to steal something they are going to steal it. A friend of mine has a single axle trailer that sometimes sits for a few weeks at a time and he puts one side on a jackstand and removes a wheel. Very effective but not convenient.

In big letter on the back the the trailer write "the owner of this trailer drives (insert your truck). If the truck pulling this isnt that, its stolen, call the cops!"

Then you have a great excuse why your buddies cant borrow it lol

They make gps tracking warning that fit right on the coupler... It will make someone think twice about stealing it.

I'm looking at the proven industries coupler lock. Looks very robust and even locks the chains. It's expensive but is the best design I've seen and is made in the USA.

GOOD insurance, is what you want, make sure you have actual TRAILER insurance and not using your vehicles insurance on it, as most policies ONLY cover trailer if its attached to your vehicle if stolen or???
so, having a good trailer policy is step #1 IMO< for peace of mind, and make sure it also covers contents of trailer, and ad on's!

next, a basic lock on the coupler is all you need, IMO, anyone going to go deeper into stealing has tools and know how to beat most set ups they sell, (coupler locks, wheel locks and so on)

if your super ambitious and have time to waste, jack trailer up and remove the tires/ that tends to make more work than many crooks are willing to put into things IMO< ! but if they want it they will get it!

Last trailer I had stolen, was locked at coupler, and was chained to a tele pole with heavy duty chain, and was parked in a very well lighted up place!

didn;t stop them at all, trailer was gone !
this si also how I found out trailers are not covered by my trucks policy unless attached to truck!
so was a total loss for me!
and the real kick in the bass for me was, when I asked my Insurance agent about insuring it, he told em NO worries, covered by vehicle policy!
which ended up being a lie, and a TRUE policy on trailer would have been like 50 buck a yr only??
so, due to his lie I found out the hard way

so best advice, have a GOOD ploicy on the trailer?? and NOT just your vehicles!

Yup, insurance is the answer.

Just got my trailer on Monday J-Cooz and had the same thoughts on my mind about securing it. Ended up just going with a $60 kit from Princess Auto (Reese Towpower 7014700 Tow 'N Store Lock Kit) that has a ball lock, safety latch lock and locking hitch pin. I plan to put a bicycle lock through one of the wheels as well. Doing all this I know it will still be super easy to just pull up to it and drag it away if you really wanted it but at least it serves as a deterant to some thieves. I didn't want to spend a lot of $ on high end locks that really weren't going to stop someone that is really determined to steal it.

Mrbb makes some great point re: insurance and I'm going to follow up on that tomorrow.

My least worries are in my driveway luckily. Coupler lock and good motion lights is all I do. If I was really worried and left it for weeks alone id take the wheels off for sure.

Ive seen many trailers stolen over the years working at the dealership. We use to take the coupler off ....didnt stop em . They somehow ratchet strapped 5 trailers up good enough to tow em to a lot and strip the boats. Seen many tongue locks busted off. Seen Flatbeds pull up on the camera and pull whole deal up, you name it. If they really want it they will get it. 🤷‍♂️

True. I'll do my best. Like I said my neighbourhood is quite safe and small, people keep an eye out for others. Almost everybody has either a boat or trailer in their driveway as well.

I'm at the end of a culdesac. Motion lights and a ring motion camera on looking at the only way up the driveway and the trailer is in its view. Its a quiet street. That plus the gps warning. Its a big gamble for a their.

Motion light, camera recording, and a gps tracker. Good luck. If I'm really lucky and I see it happening in real time on my phone I get to set off the external house alarm.

I guess the best bet if to get a thief to second guessing they can even get away with it.

Insurance unfortunately, sadly if a theif wants something one way or another they are going to get it. It might be easy or take a little bit of work. Just depends how much damage you want to fix if it's found and returned to you after they hack whatever locks or bars or chains off

A thief is one of the bottom of the barrel kinda people.. if they are caught they should loose a few fingers so they can't steal again.

I said what I said !!!

Call your insurance company. Each one has different opinions on trailers. I have Farmers insurance on the house, cars, trucks. They will cover trailers but the price is quite high so my agent went thru Foremost insurance for the ATV's, snowmobiles, and trailer. Now my trailer is discontinued in the 18 foot length. We went with stated/replacement value. I paid $2800 for it new in 2003. Its been totally redone. deck, axles, brakes, wiring wheels tires. It's insured for $4400. The 20 foot model, Triton. Years ago trailers were covered by the tow vehicle, not so much anymore. I think you'd be hard pressed to find a company that still covers trailer by the tow vehicles insurance. A separate 12 volt battery with a motion/ movement sensor that sets off a horn and makes the lights flash will stop most thieves. Locks, chains , cables are all good but the invention of cordless grinders and sawzall's have made the art of stealing much easier. Idiots can steal a catalectic converter in about a minute. I dont understand why scrape yards pay thieves for these things? A gps tracking device usually has a monthly fee. I have a classic muscle car and the forums I belong to discuss this all the time. For a trailer, remove the coupler and wheels while it isnt being used. When on a trip, back it up to something that makes it hard to get out.

GPS tracker, insurance and coupler lock.

Couple lock is a slight deterrent.
Insurance will cover the losses, but leaves you SOL if riding season. No one wants that, plus most have sentimental value with their specific sled/trailer.
GPS will alert you right away and is best option.
