Wow. I have the exact same thing, a 96 XCR 440 motor. What should I do with it? I have a couple options for the bodies, this will be a nice project sled. I envision a twin pipes high-revving screamer, what do I need to make this happen? I have the motor apart, replacing all the bearings (and pistons or rings? This is including jack and crank bearings. I picked up a set of over size carbs (not sure of exact size) but I think that may not be good for a 440 screamer? (properly clutched of course). I've been looking forward this for awhile, what should I do?

SLP makes a set of twin pipes for it. Keep the stock carbs, but vent them to the airbox, with fittings from a 97 XLT Ltd. Have a clean and match done to the cyl by a good shop. There is a guy in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan I would recommend. Have the heads CC'd to spec while they are off, and run them in high compression form, no head shims. Set the timing at the high side of factory spec. Have the pipes ceramic coated, and install a tempaflow. Gear to 19/39, run a 3211074 overdrive belt, hot seat white primary spring, white secondary spring #2, hot seat HSP34X helix, 1 .030" shim under the snap ring, and 10 weights, with primary belt clerance set to .010" no looser than .020". Verify the clutch alignment, and set the engine torque stop tight, no gap, also a polaris torque arm, there is a old kit available, good price. Engage it at 5-5500, and run 8500 top rpm. One I set up like this would run 100 on the speedo, spank XLT's, and XCR monoblocks, stock piped of course. However, if you are a heavy guy, it doesn't have much back up torque, and absolutely needs 91 octane fuel, and only RN2C plugs.
