Just bought an 1989 Ovation 340 to bomb around on, previous owner said he used it this year but now it won't start. Got it home and took it apart, no compression in left cylinder, appears very clean, other cylinder has carbon build up on it like it has been firing ok. After dissassembling, both piston rings and cylinders appears to be in the same condition, which doesn't explain the no compression in left cylinder. Should I just put new piston rings and gaskets and give it a try? Nothing seems to be wrong except the no compression and the lack of carbon buildup. Any ideas, thanks in advance.

how much compression do you have? on both sides? look for things like oil around the bottom of the engine, indicating a possible leak in the crankcase split. another area is the crank seals. hard to check, requires complete dissassembly. are there any scores or scratches on cyl walls? perhaps there's a head bolt stripped?

Maybe just had a stuck ring. Buddy did that on his dirtbike. Had no compression. Being a ******* and verry cheap he just freed the ring up and put it back together. Ran as good as it ever did.

Not saying that is the right way.
