I think they got the message, we've not invited them to stay since. They can visit anytime, but need to stay in a hotel/motel or at least with other relatives elsewhere.

Well I'm doing a combination of some of the "suggestions".

Firstly yes I am establishing rules and boundaries. No shoes in the house, thank God they don't smoke. And yes I'm making things very nice for MIL as it is difficult to criticize someone who extends themself and showers you with love and kindness.

I am more of a "kill them with kindness" kinda person than the other way.

My FIL also (we just found out last night) is not doing well. He has very little time left. And he and my husband were estranged for over a decade. Just the fact he actually wants to come and stay with us is uncharacteristic.

And they are staying for so long so they can see friends and family as they live in FLA and used to spend the summers here.

So I will diplomatically establish some rules (already did that on the phone) and it may very well be the last chance my husband and his dad have time together.

The funny thing is both my inlaws have a lot of ching. They could easily afford a hotel. But really I am surprised dad actually WANTS to stay with us.

I decided last night (actually both my h and I) we are going to grin and bear it. If I were sick and in failing health I would want a little mercy (my FIL isn't a very nice man, and that has hurt my husband over the years) so mercy and kindness I will give.

Ya I'm maybe a wimp. It's just, well my own life has had some real lows (horrible childhood, cancers, etc) and instead of being angry and hard hearted like Maybe I should be, I go the other route.

handle it in a way that best suits you. sometimes we (and you) have to think of ourselves. nothing wrong with that. other times we give in, not because we're soft, but because we think of the whole situation at hand. yes, it would be easier to send your relatives packing to a hotel, but that's not who you are , and you will give a bit of yourself to make them feel welcome. i think they call that the high road. don't worry, good karma will take care of you later.
