How is the sledding there? Assuming there's no trail riding, just mountain riding if any... Heading there in April for two weeks wanting to see if i can rent a sled or something. I was there last year and saw you can go on sled tours but riding a big bulky Yamaha up a glacier and back doesn't seem to excite me lol

Not aware of any places you can rent sleds to go riding on your own, and TBH it is really not a good idea to do without a guide.

Reason being that weathers are very unpredictable and also the landscape is very unforgiving to those unfamiliar to it.
Also you have to know what is public land and what is not, illegal to ride on privately owned land without permission.

Yeah the tours they do are the regular tourist tours that drive in single file at slow speeds to make it doable for all of the first time riders...no fun for us sledders.

Snowmobiling in Iceland is not that common, it is a very expensive hobby and also snow is more and more unpredictable there so it makes it even less enticing to get involved with.
For instance most of the riders there i know about are lawyers, engineers or other high pay professionals.

Ok, thanks for the info! I Figured there wasn't much rental options. Yup! Everything is expensive in Iceland! I guess I'll just stick to sight seeing lol...

You could try contacting the companies that provide the guided tours if there is a possibility to have a tour for a 'hardcore sledder'.
It'll probably still be on trails and maybe even the same tour as the normal one, but in a faster pace.
It'll probably also be a privat tour, so expect to have to pay even more.
It might not be possible, but I've found out some companies or specific guides don't mind (as long as you pay), but that was in Sweden and Finland.

Good luck and have fun.
Iceland is on my list of places I hope to visit once (or twice, at least summer and winter...).

There is no snowmobile trail system in Iceland to ride on, so what you know from your tourist trips to Sweden does not apply there.
Most of the tourist companies operate on glaciars to have year round driveability and a relatively flat area to ride on, in a well rehearsed circle usually.
Also many of them are not actual sledders that ride outside of work/the safari setting(sama applies to a lot of companies in Finland and Sweden as well).

Good to know.
Still, one can always ask if there are possibilities for a more expert sledder.
