I welded a 1.25" Long reciever tube to the can that is 1.625" ID, right on the little lip that is on the can, by the spring tabs. The new U-Tube slips right in and fits perfectly. I picked up the 1.625" ID strait tubing at a local Midas shop. They have tubing shrinker/spreader and can make the slip joint the exact size you need it. I purchased some 3/16" round stock from a welding supply store and made the spring tabs, they look exactly like the factory tabs.

The U Tube will have to be modified some because the stock U-Tube isn't a perfect U. The nice thing about this larger U Tube is when you are fitting up everything you can position the new U-Tube a little further away from the brake fluid bleeder nipple and brake caliper, at least 3/4" away instead of 3/8" like they come from the Factory.

I will put together a web page in the next week or so th show the different options for the 440 pipe. I took a few pictures of the ones I built but not that many, I was kinda in a hurry and alone on most of them. Most of my pictures are of the finished product.

I'll keep you guys posted.

All I can say is do not, I repeat do not talk to Bikeman Performnce about getting a pipe for the IQ. That was the worst experience I have ever gone through.

A Big Agree to DooMan383.

I specifically did not mention Bikeman in any post about pipes because of the experience of many who have attempted to use their services.

Not saying they haven't and don't make decent stuff. What I'm saying they wouldn't be on my list of folks to contact if you want something done before next summer.

you can get pipe from Jaws (ontario)or any other local pipe maker or dealer in your area. to make this pipe mod.

but the header pipe should be made larger (diameter) for the larger displacement motor, to get the best out of it. but its just a cheap fix.

I have hot to go twins for sale , had them on a 685 in a iq racer.

I have been busy playing and now will be leaving on business for 2 weeks so I won't be able to put together a webpage discussing the 440 pipe mod for a few weeks.

Here are a few pictures of the 1.625" U-Tube and pipe mod. This is what I refer to as the 38mm pipe mod as the ID of the new stinger welded to the 440 pipe is 38mm. I got all the parts from Aaen Performance with the exception of the two short pieces of tubing that are connected to the U-Tube itself, one welded to the muffler and the other welded to the upper end of the U Tube. Those two pieces I had made at Midas for $5. The Oil Tank in these pictures is the 2 qt US Plastics tank available for about $10. I build a simple bracket that welds to the steering hoop and this tank fits perfectly onto that bracket and it has plenty of clearance between the pipe and brake caliper. This is a very simple modification to the 440 Pipe and will work untill a more cost effective pipe becomes available.

The other 440 pipe mod is even more simple that the 38mm mod. I'll call it the 36mm mod, more like 35.5mm but lets call it 36mm. You just cut the end off the 440 pipe and weld the 1.5" OD stinger back on at the appropriate point (the point where the taper of the expansion chamber is 1.5" diameter). Weld 2 new spring hoops onto the pipe. Cut the flare off the 440 U-Tube and weld a short piece of 1.5" ID tubing to the U-Tube. The 2 spring hoops on the U Tube stay and do not get removed. The 36 mm pipe mod will look almost exactly like the bottom picture above with the exception of the spring hoops on the U Tube. You will need to weld 2 new spring hoops to the 440 pipe as the stock ones get lopped off to add the 1.5" OD tubing. Your new 36mm stinger will be the same length as the original 440 stinger that you cut off, approximately 2.5"-2.75" long. 02800x has some pictures of his 36mm pipe mod, they are also somewhere on this 440 forum but I couldn't find them.

Hope this helps and ask any questions if you have them.

I have been debating this for a while, I just decided to do the pipe mod.

I had to order the minimum 6 foot of the 1.4 ID tubing. So if there is any one out there looking for a section to do the pipe mod that AK described I could send out 6 inch sections.
