Default Polaris is now in the boat business.

Polaris Industries, the $5.4 billion (sales) maker of snowmobiles, off-road vehicles and motorcycles, has agreed to buy the country’s largest pontoon boat maker, Boat Holdings, for $805 million. The all-cash transaction, expected to close in the third quarter, will round out Polaris’s portfolio of power-sports products and, it hopes, give it opportunities for cross-selling.

They already make boat anchors (800) so this is a good fit.

Smart play, they have a good following with their outdoor powersports, but the engine approach will be interesting.
Yamaha, Johnson, Mercury and Evinrude have that covered.

We have the Bassmasters in Waddington NY every year now, which is like 5 miles from my home, and those guys will run twin 200's on some of these 25"+ long bassboats, and they fly!
90% of the boats are Yamaha or Mercury, that's a tough business to get your foot in.

With Polaris having a so-so reputation with engines, will they use their own or just make boats/hulls?

They won't do anything is my guess they will continue to let that segment run and make profit. Boat holdings (Polaris) makes a bunch of different name brand boats one being Bennington (nice boat) the one we have came with a yamaha 4 stroke.

Polaris is not going to be making boat engines. Boat Holdings makes boats (pontoons), not engines. No outboard boat companies make engines. The closest it gets is that Brunswick owns Lund, Crestliner and many other boat companies. Brunswick also owns Mercury. That is why you see most Lund boats with Mercury engines. G3 boats and Yamaha also have some sort of relationship. The Bennington dealer near me sells pontoons with Honda's, Yamaha's, and Suzuki's.

FYI Polaris employee meeting someone was asked if they had a 3 cylinder Snowmobile motor in the works.

Upper management at Polaris would not confirm or deny this. Interesting.

Let me guess, Arctic Cat has more pontoon boat racing wins than Polaris.

That's correct, for years I thought Mercury outboards were a subsidiary of Ford but they are related in no fashion what so ever.
Good engine though, my brother has a Mercury 120 on his Nitro and we have about 5-6 Johnboats and about 8 outboards ranging from a 9.9 to a 35, couple are Mercs and they are solid. (My brother collects and rebuilds them, makes shit tons of money off them).

Nissan makes a brute Outboard too.
Dad and I both have big Johnsons...hehehe, he has a 150 Fast Strike on his Stratos, I have a 70 on my SS-175, and that little triple has some power baby. Not good on gas though, ditched my 6 GAL for a 12 GAL this year.

Mercury engines 30HP and less are made by Tohatsu in Japan. Mercury makes their 40, 50, and 60HP engines in China. 75HP and over are made in Fond du Lac, WI.
