We did our daily social distancing again today. The governor's recent edict, which doesn't really start until Saturday @ midnite, allows for "driving for pleasure" in article 5, paragraph c:

c.Outdoor activities. Individuals may engage in outdoor activities (e.g.,walking, hiking, running, biking, driving for pleasure, hunting, or fishing), and may go to available public parks and other public recreation lands, consistent with remaining at least six feet apart from individuals from other households.

So, we got our sleds up to Silver Bay, and took a beautiful pleasure filled excursion. No need to go inside anywhere, although the laws aren't in effect until another 24+ hours, we got up to Lutsen, and toured the area's trails. We started a fire and roasted up a few schnitzels at a shelter along the Beaver trail. We got 163 miles on for the day.

The grooming is officially done for the clubs, and the State, as of last Sunday. The early temps had the semi-frozen ruts pulling at our skis, almost as if trying to knock us off our course, but as the sun came up over the trees, and north of Finland, got soft enough to let us steer without being yanked about.

Off trail, it was still over knee deep, and past mid thigh in plenty of places. A nice solid base, with a minimal amount of brown-outs made riding a ton of fun.

Is it the end? Maybe... I think the snow will hold up on the NSST for a while, but lack of grooming will make it a challenge if it gets any amount of traffic. We saw less than ten sleds all day today. Everybody was all smiles, however!! The trails had a few rumble strips here and there, but for the most part, smooth and had great traction with good steering response, except in a few shady areas where the warmth had not penetrated, and darting briefly became an issue. The Lutsen access trail near the powerlines by the lake actually had some surprisingly decent snow when we dropped in to get fuel.

The new engine in my sled is getting even stronger. and the mileage was pretty good today, averaging 14.25 mpg. I made my 4k and then some for the year!

We ran into the DNR guy out of Ely at a trail intersection last season. Really nice chap. He briefly checked that we had non-resident stickers. There were 8 in our group and he stopped checking after the first four had stickers. We then talked sleds for the next 30 minutes. He was riding a Renegade 600, fitted with all kinds of storage to haul things. He even told us some good trails to ride.

Great attitude.
