Great info as always! Thinking of taking my son up to N Shore to ride this weekend. I am familiar with the area but I have never snowmobiled up there. Given the current conditions, where would be the best/safest place to go? Not sure how many water and swamp crossings there on particular trails. DNR site basically says most trails conditions are unknown, poor, or closed. Not picky - just want to get some riding in! Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The DNR website updates late on Thursdays. You could try calling their office in Two Harbors, they have always been upfront about what they are seeing out there, if they get reports in from the crews. Unless they do a lot of packing, or rolling to help smooth out the recent snowfalls, it can be challenging to ride, but they like sleds getting out to help pack so the base isn't just fluff. Don't try to put on a hundred miles right away. I haven't heard what the clubs are told to do, as they are part of the grooming under contracts from the State, sometimes they are told to groom, or just pack early in the season. Grant-in Aid clubs have their own plans, you could try checking in with them to get a current status. A lot of folks like riding the trails out of Two Harbors.

I was out doing a quick shake down around Martin road lot and up a bit. Plenty of snow but soft and squishy. Trails need a good packing for sure. Get out there and make it happen!! Just be careful. I found myself on the wrong side of a berm fighting to stay on the trail a time or two. A bit slow and cautious going for sure.

Trails are NOT scheduled for grooming before this weekend as far as Ive heard. Might be some panning done. Some trails will be pretty hashed up by this weekend with colder temps coming.

Operator tried to pack the west trail out of Two Harbors with one of the long track tuckers today. Got stuck twice, first time was along the airport rd where a truck stopped and pulled him out. Second time he had to unhook the drag, move over and re-hook. He said it is very wet underneath all of the snow.

A night or two in the single digits at the end of this week then, we drop into a good freeze up next week. Hopefully those trails will get packed down good this weekend to drive the frost down.

A taste of what was out there a couple daze ago, I've heard the groomers are being sent out, the season is upon us!! YEEHAW!! It got into the mid 30's around here today, this packing will be firmed up soon, and will make for a fine base!

We've received 29" of white gold in the past week. Grant-In-Aid trails are mostly being packed by sleds to allow wet spots some time to freeze but some have been groomed. The C.J. Ramstad North Shore trail was cleared and groomed earlier this week. It likely will be groomed again this weekend. Riding conditions are OK, but remember it is the first weekend and some wet spots are just that and not frozen.

A great starting spot would be the trail head of the North Shore trail located on the Martin Road just on the outskirts of Duluth. (Approx. address is 3801 Martin Rd, Duluth, MN)

Ride Right and have fun!

Check out www.drifttoppers.com for current trail condition updates.
