Default Central or Southern MN trails?

We are hoping to take our kids out on the sleds over New Years. We are from Iowa and don't want to travel real far. What is the furthest South in MN the trails are decent for us to take the kids? Thanks! Happy New Years!

With all this rain I would say the trails are going to be junk.

I'm guessing Brainerd area will the closets besides the Duluth area and that area will probably be very busy.

I live 30 miles south of Brainerd and we get some new snow then rain then snow not sure I think the trails will hold up if it snows last by Monday morning. I'm hoping to get out Monday to see how the trails are unless it keeps raining.

Walker area sounds promising. Probably Mille Lacs area, unless they got rain.

Just in the last five minutes talked to a sledding friend in Pequot Lakes. He is out in our club groomer as I write this. He said he got six inches of snow today at his house on the snowmometer but it is light misty rain now. He is going out with another friend with the sleds tomorrow and will call me and update the trail conditions.

Here is what he had to say after grooming last night and riding in the Pequot Lakes area today.

I rode about 80 miles today on trails. Some trails were pretty bad, bumps were fairly prevalent but not 2 foot deep whoop-de-doos, we had slush, frozen slush, and broken ice, and a stretch of 35' of open water. Lots of groomed trails had hard ice & snow chunks as the base to drive on. That's what you get after rains if the drag can't bust them into snowflake size before they pass under the back of the drag. Some areas were fresh groomed, we met 2 groomers out working on trails to the south of our club's area.

Our Groomer is ready to go out tomorrow way early AM. The normal schedule will happen but will be shifted 1 day later in the week.

Today we got another 1-2" of good snow. But that doesn't show up on the snowMometer, maybe it has been moved away by wind. It shows 1 foot 5" on the ground.

Hopefully everyone understands that our lakes are not safe yet, swamps are a 'proceed at your own risk status'. Any route that needs lake crossing in the 100 mile radius would be best left alone. I'm sad to say that my 2014 is not good at water crossing based on today's impromptu 35' test.

I talked to Bob in Pequot Lakes last night. He has been out two days since Monday. He said the clubs have been doing a lot of work and have gotten the trails back into pretty decent riding condition. He said a lot of the trails to the east weren't groomed. Our club trails are all groomed and will be grooming into the weekend. The lakes are firming up with the cold weather but some aren't staked yet. If the below freezing weather continues that will change. He said trails to the west and north are the best condition. He said it is now worth coming up to ride. Things are looking up.

Trails are ridable East of Little Falls trails where groomed for first time 1-3-20.

East of Fort Ripley has been groomed at least once a week for the past 3 weeks. I would give these trails 8 out of 10 going towards Garrison.
