Be careful out there though. LOTS of open/hidden water/thin ice. Lots of land minds. Lots of downed trees, etc.

Wrong, Stang

Trails can’t be open if there is no snow.

Finally, we get dumped on the day before trails open. So many years we can’t ride until Jan. !!

Perfect start to season. Let’s ride boys!!

It says right in there that trails officially open December 1st.

Everything else is talking about when grooming generally starts. A trail can be open but not groomed. As far as I know trails in MN are open between December 1 to March 31, regardless of snow conditions or if there is snow at all.

It does say something in there about having adequate snow conditions. It also says the trails may stay open past March 31st if the snow conditions will allow, at the discretion of the DNR, on state trails usually. The trails that go through private property that the land owners allow trail access, they are closed as of March 31st regardless, as that is the agreement that they sign. Anywhere they allow 4wheeler ditch riding, you can ride a snowmobile in also, regardless. Just stay off the official trails if they aren't open. Last year they were handing out tickets left and right where I am after April 1st, even though we had tons of snow. I rode the ditch and was never hassled. Problem is, you really can't go to far by me in the ditch.

I was told that by a Trail Groomer friend of mine, and a local cop friend of mine. Which, a lot of is at the discretion of the cop. Basically, tell it to the judge is what he told me.

Here is what it actually says: "trails officially open Dec. 1 each year. Regardless of the date on the calendar, several conditions must be met before trails are groomed and ready for travel:"

The distinction is "open" vs "groomed" and ready for travel.

They are always open 12/1 but groomed and ready for travel is very different. If we had to wait for them to be groomed to be open...well they often wouldn't be open for a long time.
