Default Atv trail registration

Picking up an atv this week. It has a 2012 trail tag on it but the current owner doesn't have the registration slip. The owner knows the previous owner and have me his name.

Ran the VIN and it came up with nothing and both owners are business owners so the likelihood is pretty low. I'm getting a bill of sale and want to register it for trail use so I can ride it on the trails.

I ran into a problem with a sled that I bought as the owner never reistered it in his name. I was lucky enough that he gave me the the trail tag and it had the owner and the I just created a new bill of sale. Since I don't know the previous owner is, I have a guess, is there anyone outside of the DNR that will tell me who this thing is registered to? Can Joe law officer run the VIN and get me the owner info?

There not supposed to give you that info but if you know someone good they will usually give you that info.
Working on two trailers that were not registered by last owner and do not have previous owners info.
Will have to ask for couple favors from local officer!!

If you have the previous owners name, go in with 2 Bill's of Sale. One from each. That way you can tell the person at the desk that the previous owner is friends with the current and they weren't sure who needed to sign so you got both of them to. If you can't find the original owner to sign for you, you can guess how to resolve that...

x2700,
Had the same problem with a trailer. DMV told me to spend $125 on parts and bring in the receits and they would register it as "home built" New tires and tail lights did it.

I may have to do that?
Hopefully I can pull some strings at local cop shop and get current names on registration?
