Default Trail 109 to 8/15 near Baraga

Hello,

I'm curious if anyone has information about the closure of the trail 109 connector that goes all of the way to 8/15 by Baraga. I'm planning on doing a cross UP trip but noticed that the trail was closed. The DNR said it was being re-routed but was waiting for the snowmobile clubs to provide more feedback.

Just wondering if anybody knows if will open back up or if there is a shortcut to get to Baraga from houghton with trail 15 being closed also.

Thanks

Kevin

good question, I'm glad you asked because we have a trip planned also and I
didn't realize that trail was closed. I wish when the DNR puts these maps online,
that they would include who grooms/maintains what trails, so the club can be
contacted directly.

See Snow Valley Trail Report page on MSA site; map shows current reroute (ie new trail).

109 had a lot of zig-zagging two years ago. It did go by a bar/restaurant in Alston though.

15 from Baraga to Chassell is closed this season. Called convention bureau. Was told bridge washout, no repairs scheduled this season.

Is that the up to date map for this season? Is 109 worth all the turns or is the southern route a better trail even though longer? Heading across the UP this winter and this area has always presented problems with adjoining the Keewenaw to the Marquette area trails.

That map is a few(4-ish) years old. I doubt at that scale it matters much. One can go to a site or two & check maps.

Once on trail 8 approaching Michigamme it’s easy to hook up to snowmobiling nirvana to Twin Lakes & beyond. Much of the greater Marquette area can take some navigation efforts. Of course a wild card is the snow conditions at the time in question. During heavier snows, things are much easier.
