N.J. snowmobiler gets 12 tickets for failure to stop, high-speed chase in Old Forge
By David Figura

OLD FORGE, N.Y. -- A New Jersey snowmobiler recently learned the hard way what happens when you fail to stop at a police snowmobile check point and try to get away in the Old Forge area.

Manuel Alvarez, 27, of Franklin Lakes, N.J. was hit with a total of 12 tickets when Town of Webb police finally caught up with him a short time later. During the ensuing chase, a female passenger, Stephanie Kirk, 26, of Manchester, N.J., was thrown off the rear of his sled as he took a sharp turn to evade police.

The incident occurred at about 3:15 p.m. Jan. 26 as Town of Webb snowmobile units were conducting trail compliance checks in the vicinity of Trail 1. A rider in a 2012 Arctic Cat snowmobile failed to stop for marked police officers and marked police snowmobiles, according to Town of Webb Police Chief Ron Johnston in a news release.

The popular Old Forge/Town of Webb snowmobile trail system is private and riders must have a permit to ride on it.

According to the news release, Alvarez “sped away from patrols at a high rate of speed and was witnessed a short time later by other patrols at a high rate of speed on North Street in the hamlet of Old Forge. Police officers in vehicles activated emergency lighting and the defendant again failed to comply.”

As Alvarez was attempting to get away, “another uninvolved snowmobiler was nearly struck head-on by the defendant moments before (Alvarez dumped) his passenger.” That snowmobiler assisted police with information about which direction Alvarez was headed.

Kirk was uninjured when she was thrown from Alvarez’s sled. However, she was “uncooperative and refused to give any information” about Alvarez.

Further investigation revealed that Alvarez had stowed his snowmobile after the pursuit at Schuler’s Sled in Old Forge where he rents a storage shed. Once he pulled into the business’s parking lot, he stripped down and placed all his snowmobile clothing under a parked vehicle outside of Schuler’s Sled Shed.

“Police pursuant to further investigation were able to find the defendant walking down Route 28 wearing only a pair of shorts and a T-shirt,” Johnston wrote.

Alvarez was taken in to custody and processed at Town of Webb Police Department on the following charges: unlawfully fleeing a police officer, reckless endangerment, reckless operation (snowmobile), failure to comply, unregistered snowmobile, uninsured snowmobile, no registration validation sticker, imprudent speed, operating w/o headlights, no trail permit, failure to cross highway at 90 degrees and inadequate/modified exhaust.

He was released on appearance tickets with no bail in accordance with the state’s bail reform guidelines, according to the news release.
What a moron!!!! You mean he can afford rental space at Schuler’s Sled Shed but he can't afford a registration, insurance, or a trail permit. Another surprise .... he had a "can" on his sled. I am glad that they caught him, even though Snooky would not rat on him.

On a side note, a couple of years ago, a couple of guys I know rode straight to the OF Recreation Center from Stillwater for the demo rides and, after the demo rides, they went to head straight back to Stillwater. Well, the Town of Webb police stopped them and wrote them tickets for no permits. They were VERY polite to the Town of Webb Police explaining that they only came in for the demo rides. After they got the tickets, they went straight to the Visitors' Center and bought full season trail permits. They pleaded not guilty in respectable and apologetic letters to the judge along with receipts for their full season trail permits. The judge threw out their tickets; no fines.

The moral of the story is DON'T RUN FROM THE POLICE, the consequences of getting caught are far less than the consequences of running.

My wife was just reading the wastebook commentary on this story to me out loud...and it appears him and his dad have been arrested over their 5 million dollar gambling ring they run and numerous other run-ins. Good honest people over there.
