Question '04 starter issue

I replaced the starter last year on my '04 GSX 800 because it froze up and smoked. With the new starter (aftermarket), the starting gear fires out and immediately retracts while spinning as it should. Why won't it stay engaged with the ring gear? I also replaced the battery and starter solenoid when I did the starter.

Following. Mine does the same thing. Will engage the flywheel once and awhile but not every time. Battery has 12.6 volts. New battery and connections are great.

Sometimes the starter gear splines need a shot of WD40. It causes the gear to no go all the way out

So I ended up buying another new starter. Bingo, it works. So apparently the first one was defective

Did you do an aftermarket or a skidoo?

Went aftermarket ( DB Electric on EBay). Under $60 delivered and an hour to swap out.
