Engine locked up at an idle after a reverse run. I am trying to determine the cause. Power valve looks like it had slight contact maybe, but the way the piston is chipped, seems it would gave caught something on the down stroke. Large piece of piston came off and stuck to head causing the lockup. Cylinder wall is pretty damaged. After it locked up, I worked it back and forth 10 times maybe, prob not enough to cause the grooves in the cylinder. So I'm guessing a problem started and the piston chipping off was the final outcome. Damaged side is mag side, pto side also shown. Nevermind the blood.

Also, I'm not sure pistons are stock, I see 90.5 on them, 5k miles. Stock is 90.3mm?
I think the cylinder is shot.

Any ideas?

Looks overly rich to me. I was following my GF on the 370 do that says how much I was babying it. Was also in very low snow conditions, 3". But I kept an eye on temp light and nothing.
I also dont think I burped the coolant properly last year.
Looks like piston ring rotated as well to the exhaust port.

Could all of that be the cause?

At the minimum, I feel I need to replace the mag jug and two new pistons. Should prob do bottom end as well with 5k miles on it? That can wait till spring I hope. The piece of piston hit head and locked it up.

Head has some nicks that should be smoothed out.....maybe also checked for flatness?

What are the chances locking up hard at an idle compromised the lower rod bearing?

Do you have pics of the power valve's? Did it lock up in reverse or right after reverse to forward? Stock is 90.3mm, how deep are the gouges, any gouges above or below the exhaust port? Doubt you'd have anything to worry about with the crank, just be sure you clean the bottom end out to ensure no foreign stuff is in there.

Stock piston wouldn't have 90anything stamped on it would it? And no Arrow, just a dot. Or am I not remembering correctly on a 1000? Cylinder can be repaired/exchanged, Pistons replaced, head might need to be replaced too. Let's see pic. 1000 rod/bottom end is Stout. That should be good for a long time yet. Poke a shop vac down there to grab any debris, then compressed air.
