On Feb. 8, 1969, 47 snowmobiles began the first I-500 on the original track made only of snow and just 26 finished. The three-person teams were required to switch drivers at least every 50 laps. They average top speeds were only 36 m.p.h., allowing fans to cross the track between racers.

It took 13 hours and 42 minutes for the winning team, Lapeer County's Dan Planck and Otis and Leonard Cowles, to complete 500 laps.

The last 150 laps the track usually goes to shit and is just death with moguls and ruts in the corners.
