Hey , I just purchased a 98 ZR600 sled for the season. I've only been in the sport for two years. I first purchased a 470 summit not knowing any better when I started riding. I am totally freaking about this sled. Does anyone have any comment about the 98 ZR600 EFI. Is it a good sled?. I'm just excited to finally have a real sled!!!. Does anyone have any good pictures of a 98 ZR600 BLK. I want to start dressing this sled up for the season and wouldn't mind some ideas. I'm going to go black with green accessories.

Shank...nice sled! I had the same thing without EFI. It was a fast sled even by today's standards.
One bit of advice/warning - pull the secondary/driven clutch off and inspect the large cast bracket that serves as the engine mount and bearing mount for the clutch.
The bracket is part no. 27 in this drawing:
http://www.brownsleisureworld.com/Parts/SN...ELATEDPARTS.htmI know of at least 2 98 600's (mine being one) where the bolts came lose and both the bracket and bulkhead were slightly damaged. I ended up replacing the bracket with one from the 99 since it has an extra mounting hole to make it more secure (and I used larger, grade 8 bolts)- obviously Cat realized the weakness and made the change in 99.
Oh yeah, keep a few exhuast springs with you. I broke one almost every ride.
Other than that, you should have good luck with it. I sold mine with 4500 miles on it and it still had the original hyfax!

Also known for burning up stators. I had the same sled, was great until the stator went.

My first new sled was a 98 ZR LE with the clicker shocks and always rusted up knob on the handlebars for the front of the skid...
I loved it, with the expection that belly pan was always discolored with exhaust. My only real complaint was that it was hard on gas, very hard. Of course that could be because of the driver, but I will never admit to that.

There was a recall on that motor. The top end was replaced by Cat no charge. Pistons, rings and cylinders. There may be a update sticker somewhere under the hood if it was done. If you cant find the sticker ask a dealer to run the serial number to see if ever was done. You got another year warranty on the motor after the update.

Oh, I forgot about that. My family bought 3 of those that year and all of them needed the new motor.

Put a bead of silicone down each exhaust spring. It will sometime keep them from breaking and if they do break they will stay together and not fall into bellypan.

I picked it up today and brought it to work. It looks like the motor was redone in 99 from the Arctic Cat recall. The clutch bracket has four bolts in it and all look tight. It has the adjustable suspension knob behind the steering wheel. I don't have a freaking clue how that's going to work. Should be interesting! I love the sound of a Cat compared to ski-doo I had. I've started it a dozen times already tonight.
The recoil isn't catching all the time, I think it should be a cheap fix. The clutch looks to be in good condition.
I'll be dreaming of snow, it going to be night and day compared to my last sled (470 Summit- what was I thinking!- Very dark period in my life, It was horrible, watching all those Cats fly by! -I'm better now already!!!!)

MAYBE YOU SHOULD TAKE A DRIVING COURSE ON HOW TO DRIVE A REAL SLED. YOU ARE IN FOR A SURPRISE WHEN YOU HIT THE THROTTLE.

Tell me about it. Paid $785 Canadian for a new one only to find out I could have got one from Cat's salvage place for $50 US, should have went to TRF a couple months sooner <_<

You'll love that sled and you'll be happy you have the front arm adjust cause that sled loves to throw the skis in the air

Good Luck

I have the exact same sled. In 2000 I got to use one for 2 weeks. In 2001 I bought one. I have always been very happy with the entire package. Great power, handling, mileage, and speed. I did go through a cylinder once, but that was due to too many miles on the rings.
The first time you go from 0-90 in the blink of an eye, and from 0-40 with the skis off the ground, you will be sooooo happy you bought that sled. For what it's worth, mine will do 103 top end (at least according to the stock speedo). You won't run into too many times/places where you will be wishing you had more zip. That sled is as fun to ride as anything I've been on so far.
Now for some snow. JR
