Whew, between the exchange rate, price of fuel and all these trails being shut down, Quebec is getting real iffy this year. I hope the government has thought about the potential loss of tourism dollars. Damn shame, best trails in the world.

Banished motoneigists of the arable lands Nicolas St-Pierre The Press The motoneigists who are accustomed to circulating on arable lands are likely to butt themselves with barriers this winter. Exasperated by the slowness of the Charest government to reduce their tax burden, on the farmers decided to prohibit the access of their grounds to the entertaining vehicles. Orchestrated by the Federation of the producers of commercial cultures of Quebec (FPCCQ), which gathers nearly 11 000 farmers, the movement of protest occurred last month in Center-of-Quebec. It aims initially the cross-country vehicles but will extend soon to the motoneiges. The farmers of Abitibi, Mauricie and Montérégie encased the step since. The areas of Lanaudière and Quebec could join to the movement before long. Since 2002, with the support of the Union of the agricultural producers of Quebec, the Québécois farmers claim a reform of the municipal taxation, which they consider inequitable. Understanding motoneigists Vice-president and chief of the direction of the Federation of the clubs of motoneigists of Quebec, Raymond Lefebvre refuses to throw the stone with the farmers, even if 40 % of the 33 700 km paths of motoneige which account Quebec pass by arable lands. "the Federation, its clubs and its voluntary always maintained good relations with the farmers, says it. They are respected and one needs them. One can only hope that their problem of taxation is solved." Besides the Federation multiplies the pressures near the government in the hope to make move the things. "the situation is very alarming in the touched areas", adds nevertheless Mr. Lefebvre. "All the tradesmen, all the hotel ones and all those which live economic repercussions of the motoneige are anxious." One estimates at 1,4 billion the generated repercussions each winter in Quebec by industry the motoneige.
