Once I single pipe (SLP) my '02 800. I thought about putting an EGT gauge on it. A buddy says to "save my money." If my motor gets to hot because of bad gas(lean) i wont see it, it happens to fast and I will blow my engine. I won't be watching the EGT, i will be watching the trail. Any comments or opinions would be helpful.

EGT gauges are great for tuning, if you run lean in powder or running hard on lake it will burn down before you see the gauge. Save your money for proven set ups listed by HCS members. Clutching is best money spent. :div20:

I'll disagree. EGTs are great for tuning AND for watching for leaning-out as the temperature drops while riding. As the sun drops and the temps start getting colder while you are out riding, you can easily glance at your EGTs to see how much "hotter" they are reading versus what they were during the peak-sun of the day. If they start getting too hot (ie, you get nervous), then you can always rejet or take it easy the rest of the ride.

do u run your jetting that close to the edge that if it cools down 20 degres your going to burn down. a tempaflow would be a good thing jet it close let the tempaflow do the rest. i had a big bore xc 700 with twins and ported. i had egts on that but was really built and a little more touchy

i have always like the thought of having egt's on a drag sled but
i don't think i would want them on my trail sled. a single pipe on
that sled shouldn't have any real problems as long as you don't
go crazy lean with the jetting.
besides, from what i hear, the poo big block twins run scarry hot
egt's with factory jetting.

I agree^, pretty cheap piece of mind, and a lot better to install in the off season,
than replaceing pistons during the peak rideing season!! Even the El-Cheapo
Westech gauges saved a piston in my stock 600 EFI Zr when an injector took a dump on me!

If I could figure out where to put one on my 06 600 HO I will put one on. Excellent tool for tuning. With out one it is alot more difficult to dial in a sled. Once dialed in you can what for problems and catch them early. Although it is true that you will not catch a bad fuel detonation problem fast enough to make a difference. I always suggest running EGT's to my mod customers. Tempa Flow is also a good plan of attack too.

As a owner of a EGT set up I can tell you IF your moding your sled in ANY WAY (jetting clutching ect) your doing it with your eyes closed..... My 2001xc 800 stock was fine , I jetted it down 2 jet sizes like every one said is safe.... found the EGT at part power the EGT went out threw the roof on cold days! 1250~1300* at 40 Mph constant. leaving it that way more then likely would have side lined it for crank, pistons , rods , bearings or worse. Tuneing without the big picture is a expensive lesson to learn. My pyro 2000 EGT set up only cost 210.00 retail at my local dealer , its saved me from making stupid mistakes and in the end it increased my power and fuel economy . In the hands of a tuner that can read plugs the EGT info can make a good carb set up a perfect set up. needle and main jet selection are easy to make once you have the info! check out this site , they sell just about every thing on the market!

the egt is nice for tuning a race sled. but for a trail sled, just start as they recomend you to and you will be fine.
one bad thing about the egt is it will drive you nuts on the trail. you will watch it and question everytime it looks like it is getting warm.
