I am interested in installing a Hydrofoil on my boat. I have a 17' Starcraft with a 190HP Mercruiser I/O. We went to a larger lake yesterday and it took me longer than normal to plane out. I am asking others opinions, ease of installation, and what brands work the best. I took a browse through my Overton's catalog last night, but I want to hear it directly from you guys.

Thanks in advance for the help!

Ok wise guy, you obviously don't know anything about boating! I have no problem on a smooth river or lake, but if you have 6 people in a boat and are on choppy water, then it takes a bit more than normal to plane out! I am asking people from my experience from couple weeks ago. I am going to the same lake on Sunday, so I will try messing with the trim a touch to see what happens. I will not also have 6 people in the boat either. I never have had a hard time planing out until that trip.

p.s. 190HP for my size boat is like having 600HP in a street Camaro. Plenty O' Power!!!

doesn't seem that way, now does it...hmmmm lol.gif lol.gif

Just pulling your leg Nicky... actually, I do have some insight to weird things like this, basically, it HAS to help, you are giving it more lift, so it will make it easier to plane.. But as usual, I would think, you may lose top end... has to be a downfall, or it would come on there... B)

Any of the brands work OK, Its just that they put more stress on the outdrive than normal. Your size boat is close too the maximum to use one. The bigger boats can have have trim plates bolted to the hull to help the trim. Everytime you take off you should pull the outdrive all the way in and then trim out as you get going

If this starcraft a Montego???

Those things were buggers to get planed because the motor was too heavy for the boat length.

Where is the motor revving out to when you are running light with little fuel. If it is less than 4500 rpm then switch to a lower pitch prop.

Better yet if you can get a hand on a torque shift prop try it.

DO NOT get a hydroplane. They may help you plane. BUT you will also lose speed.

You can also install trim tabs. Use a straight edge and run then 1/4" above the keel. It will help you plane and when you are running full speed they will not drag.

Also check your boat bottom for straightness. I had a starcraft american and the stringers let go and the bottom buckled.

Clean the bottom too!!!

Anyways ahev fun
