I guess I did not realize there is the performance difference between the two is pronounced, I have 98 600.
What is the design difference between the two, and how much faster is the 220?
Why did they change to the 824?
Got to like the old big block, how does the 600 compare design wise other then cc's?

220 more torque, quicker, 118 hp drag racing
824 more HP, faster 120-122 hp or so

I believe both motors (600 and 700) share the same bottom end.
How fast have you had your 600? I had mine going 104 mph on radar in a 2000-foot run right after I bought it. The speedo was showing 110.
None of the other 600s then (in 1998) were coming close to 100 mph on the same day in the same distance on the same pond. The MXZ 583 was second fastest, with speeds in the mid-90s. The ZR and V-Max were slower.
Two other friends each had a 600, and both also got 104 at various times. My father-in-law had a 1997 limited-build 700-twin (prototype) that he bought in December of 1996. It had quite a bit more top-end than my 600 had, but the two seemed to share a lot of the same design (except for the seat and the shape of the cylinder head).
Lots of people have put 10,000+ miles on their big blocks without any problems.

220 and 824 versions are the 700cc class - not the 600s. 220 were the early version started out in 97 RMK700s and early '98 XC700 snowchecked buyers - after that, the 824 version took over. 220's were the ones that did very well in the grass drag events. Because of a smaller ports, it created more torqe than the 824s but the 824 created slightly more hp on top. I have had both versions and my personal favorite was the 220. WL.

if I remember correctly the 220 have a taller but narrower exhaust port and the 824's are short and fat but not by much...

i thought it was the 220 was wider, part of the reason for the change to the narrower 824 , was the 220,s cly were snagging rings on the wide ports

Keep in mind that the 220 cyl. motors also ran a single ring piston which was changed to a double ring setup when they went to the 824's. And not "ALL the 220 cyl ran the single ring but all the 97 1/2 for sure and some snow check

The 220 version was pulling around 115 - 117hp between 7.6k - 7.8k revs while the 824 version was pulling anywhere from 118 - 120hp and spins between 7.8k - 8k. But the 220 has a slightly stronger grunt than the 824 version. Its tough to beat the 220s version. WL.

824 taller exhaust port, shape different as well. Said to correct ring snagging issues/port cracking, but it has been said to gain a bit of peak hp to compete with the 670 HO which was coming that year.
