I was just wondering how the riding is up in Newfoundland. Me and my friends are thinking about taking a trip up there this winter for some riding since the backcountry stuff in New Hampshire pretty much sucks. One of my friends ( ProX16) went to school with a kid from Newfoundland ( i think he lives near Lewis Hills) and he said theres tons of snow every winter, which kinda makes me jealous. Oh yeah, do you have to register your sled up there if all you do is ride backcountry? Might be a stupid question, but I just wanted to know

I'm sure that somebody would show you around the Hills if you were to travel up this way!
You don't have to register your sled to ride in the backcountry, however, you will need a trail pass to access the hills. They can be bought for a season, week or day pass. Not sure of the rates for this coming season, but this past year, I think I paid $60 (Canadian) for the season pass.

Ok sounds great! Thanks for the info guys. That would be pretty sweet to hook up with all of you for some backcountry riding. Im into jumping and stuff too, so Im sure we would get along great. ProX16 mentioned that his friend from school was on someones website, maybe the Lewis Hillbillies, but im not sure. From what ProX16 said, this kid is pretty insane on a sled. Im not sure of his name, but he went to school at Hebron Academy in Maine and hes probably about 18-ish, maybe someone knows him because we are trying to get a hold of him to make plans

not too sure who the kid is that you're talking about.
JUE and myself and Snow Terriorist are some of the original members of Lewishillbillies. come on over and check out the site. its a pretty good bunch of level heads promoting snowmobiling/motorcross and the outdoor lifestyle here in NL.

This may sound dopey, but--- how do you get there? If we're coming from the states with sleds, whats the easiest way to get there?
ZRider600
Jul 25 2005, 11:35 PM
I Mapquested the route for the trip and to get the Newfoundland from Northern New Hampshire, we have to head up thru Maine, into Canada, and then take a 100 mile ferry ride across Newfoundland. It said it would take a little less than 24 hours to make the trip.
JUE
Jul 26 2005, 09:09 AM
I can help from New Brunswick/Nova Scotia Border, but from there, there are many routes into the states, either through New Brunswick or Quebec.
Anyway, once you get to the New Brunswick/Nova Scotia border, you'll have approximately 4.5 to 5 hours driving to the Ferry in North Sydney. Then, during the winter, the ferry usually crosses in about 6 hours. Once you hit Newfoundland, it's 1.5 to 2 hours drive to us. (Driving times dependant on speeds of course, but approx. at speed limits). The map below outlines the route from Moncton, New Brunswick (50 kms west of the border) to Newfoundland.
However, once you are here, accessibility to sledding is prime compared to what you would be used to in the states. There are literally no boundaries. We do not worry about private land restrictions, road crossings, etc. Mostly free riding and picking your own route. However, for the trail loving rider, we have a great groomed trail system.
Keep the hillbillies in mind if you are heading up.

Hey man, let us know when you plan on going over. We made a trip with the Hillbillies last year, I actually made 2 trips. The boys are awesome and will definately show you a good time. We are going back over next year for sure. I live in Cape Breton, like 45 minutes from the NL ferry. If you need help just let me know. Be more that happy to help cause you ain't been snowmobiling until you get into those frickin HILLS.

Hello,
Is there a way to make it to Lewis Hills, or other Labrador destinations, from Quebec? How hard of a ride is it? Any insight would be appreciated.

Any info at all would be greatly appreciated.

You can visit the Newfoundland and Labrador Snowmobile Federation site at www.nlsf.org to get some information but its pretty limited. Did you have any areas in mind of where to ride? If you had an idea of where you were headed I could track down some info for you.
The associations hand out trail maps to members each year, maybe if you tried one of them you could get a copy before heading over. The Stephenville one on the West Coast is www.bsgsa.ca (Bay St. George Snowmobile Association)....its the one I belong to.

Thanks for the links...it's much appreciated. None of us have ever been snowmobiling over there and have no clue where we should go. Any recommendations?
So far we've just gotten to the point where we've decided for sure that we want to do it and I've sent for some tourism brochures. Is there one area in particular that generally has the better trail system......ammenities on the trails/or close to them.....and most importantly....which area has the most snow? *lol*

It really depends on the type of riding you want to do but the West Coast; Stephenville, Corner Brook area, has the most snow aside from the Northern Pennisula. There are two airports that can bring you into the west coast, Stephenville and Deer Lake (The first being at the base of the Lewis Hills and the second being about 80 miles to the east). The trail system here is well maintained once the season is underway, but amenities are more sparse than on the mainland...although you won't be hard pressed to find a warm-up shelter to stretch your legs and have a mug-up and the occasional restaurant every few hours.
The Lewis Hills have great riding just minutes off the trail system. Check out www.lewishillbillies.com for some pictures and conversation on what our riding conditions are like. There is a map of the area on the main page you can you as reference. I've also attached another for you to have a look at some GPS plotted points through the trails and over the country...*but these are only as reference, the federation trail map is the best to use.
If you want some feedback on the Lewis Hills area join in the forum there and you'll get a lot of advice. Hope your trip works out and if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.
Cheers....

Rog....you're a sweetheart for sharing all this info. And I'm guessing now that the guys are gonna want to go to the Lewis Hills once I show them the pics that 800 H.O. posted. Those are absolutely gorgeous, dude! Thanks for posting them.
As far as the type of riding we'll be doing.....I'm the only girl that rides with the group of 6 or 7 guys and they're all pretty aggressive riders. And the offtrail stuff in the hills sounds like it's right up their alley....right on!
We'll be taking the ferry over so that leads me to my next question.....once we come ashore how long is the drive to the Lewis Hills area?

To Stephenville, where we stayed is only maybe hour and 45 minute drive from the ferry. Beginning or late March is when we will be going over as well. We will be on here all winter making the plans with the boys in NL. They showed us a good time and now we are regular Hillbillies. You should check out there site cause as the winter progresses that is where we all keep in touch and stuff and let them know what is going on. www.lewishillbillies.com Just check it out and you can meet all the boys. We will be in touch. :beerchug:

Well if its offtrail they want then they won't be disappointed...throw in a mix of powder and trail and they'll be glad they made the trip. 800HO was on the money with the time to Stephenville...lots of places to stay and you can leave from the Holiday Inn, DreamCatcher Lodge or Keyano Motel on your machine and get to the trails if the conditions are right.

To answer your questions guys, you can run a 121 with a 1.25 lug pretty much anytime of the year up there, in fact thats what a lot of the boys have...but there's a lot of spots where you'll be looking from the bottom to the top while others play around. That being said, those are the 144's or bigger with 2" lug.
As for elevation, the highest peak is 815 meters...about 2,700ft, but we're running at about 1500-2000ft for the most part once you're in the hills.
