2001 600 was the first year with apv. Run pretty strong for a 600. No major issues. I bought one that was a demo with 1800 miles on it in Feb. 2002 and sold it to a buddy, who now has 4000 trouble free miles on it.

7600+ miles on my '01. replaced pistons and 1 cylinder at 5500 miles last year. Replacement was done to ensure last year was trouble free. Once apart I found that the locating pin for the rings fell out and the ring was chewing away at the exhaust port so I replaced the cylinder. Alll in all the sled has been awesome. It takes the abuse I hand out and asks for more. I have not had any recalls or other troubling issues come up.

Sweet! Mine is efi and works well. The light throttle pull is the best part. Is it in good shape? I would suggest you pull the cylinders and do a ring job as mentioned above. Just to be safe.
If you have any questions let me know.

other than gumming up (which is a oil problem) i have heard nothing but good of the 01 - 02 600 apv. the 500 is an entirely different story!

As greg said at 5000 switch the pistons they begin to wear inside the ring slots, then the rings are pushed into the new gap after time and it scraps the hell out of the pistons and cylinder. I know this as my engine guy had a 2002 zl 600 that had this exact thing done i believe it was at 5500miles. He said just switch around 4500-5000miles and there a great motor. My uncle just bought a brand new 2001 zr 600 efi in the crate back in february for $6200, and its a awsome sled. It has strong low end grunt and is enjoyable to ride. In our group its right with a 2005 gsx 600, i think its faster. And not to far behind our 2001 zirt 6.
