I'm trying to get more wildlife into my webcam
Coles Pond Weathercam I've done well with turkeys and ducks, but only seen deer or moose very occasionally and can't get them to feed. I just ordered an "On-Time" wildlife feeder
http://ontimefeeders.com/index.html to help with this. Does anyone have experience on what it takes to get deer to come on a regular basis? Any hints?

I have tried several different pruducts, but always seem to have the best luck when I simply throw out apples and cobbed corn. For whatever reason they like corn on the cob alot more than shelled corn.
You can try some kind of mineral block, they often work well, the deer will end up digging a hole where the block was. Just don't use a pure salt block unless you really have to, salt is bad for deer, at least that much salt is bad for deer. You can usually find some mineral blocks that are made up of healthier ingredients.
If you wanted to stick some time and effort into it, it would be really neat if you worked up a little area behind the feeder and planted a food plot. Plant some BioLogic or Antler king Honey Hole or something like that with some Clover and Rape, the deer really love that. Well, they love it in WI anyways.
Good luck :div20:

Not trying to hijack yer thread but if any guys are ever looking for something for a good food plot here in Canada we have "CanaMaize "corn which is "dwarf" corn...so it only groew like 4.5 to 6' and works great for deer. It's early maturing too so no worries in the colder climates and it's easy to seed. I used to work for the company and scouted plenty of fields with hundreds of deer!!
But as for you Rob.....the mineral lick would be the best, that or spread some whole grain and let them come to it!

Ok, we picked up a salt lick for deer at Agway today.. I placed it at the edge of the "lawn" just to the right of the birdfeeder in the cam view. Keep watching

grains work best, feed plots work good to, but all the plants and trees in your yard will get eat up too. you could make a little lighted feed trough for night viewing too.
what really works good is, make a dummy, dress it in hunters cloths and prop it against a tree just like he's sleeping. never fail to snor a few off me during season. :smilielol:

Here is some good info on feeding and attracting deer. There are some pros and cons. The one thing that you don't want to do is feed them from a trough as it can spread disease from one deer to the next. Best to spread the food on the ground.
Hope to see some great pictures! :div20:

I use Buck Jam, the apple flavor. If you have a dead stump or log nearby or if its not in view, drag it into view and pour this on it. They will definately be around. Man does that stuff smell good. you can by it at sports authority. I poured it in a few different spots, one was a dead stump pile almost 3 feet high last hunting season around the end of august, by the beginning of november it was down to about 8" high.

Go to a farm related store and buy cow malasis. Cheap and they love that too. Don't spend too much money on something cause cheap stuff can make them come in even more.

This guy thinks he's clever, but little does he know, He is soon going to contribute to the training of the new Coon hounds

robb looks like a smorgasboard on the last pic.s. there's a place in gods world for all his creatures, right next to my mashed potatoes.
i finally talked to my neighbor up by my cabin about the cobb feeder to told ya about.
he said to take a 2x4 and drive a few (6-8) gutter nials through it, then pound the cobbs on the nails. securely attach it to a tree or your feeder pole/platform.

Salt licks don't work the same year round. In your particular area they will only visit when the can't get the nutrients from natural sources they are used to. If you pour your left over driveway salt on the ground they will dig a hole just the same as if you use deer crack or deer cocaine. Its all a salt based mineral. BUT if you dont have soil like clay that will hold the minerals there long ,,, niether will they. You have to suit there needs right now and sometimes corn with an auto feeder is to early right now. they prefer soft nubs , buds and sprouts. Moose definately like water vegitation with little or no disturbance by anything. Just because they are so vulnerable in the water. early stuff coming up are clover and chic peas. I have auto feeders up in Michigan that dont even get touched because they have so much to eat this year.. Something as simple as a good bale of hay will do it. the females are getting close to dropping in a few weeks and they will like the easy chew and plentiful nutrients. We leave all our grasses and ferns go cuz the does always bed in there. They love tall grasses and thick cover which they can easily escape or just stand up and see mommy. Its amazing how protective mothers are but when they realize your no harm and there just to feed them they pay you no mind. This was the closest I have ever been to a new born about24".....

They like mineral blocks. Deer hit ours all the time.
Carrots are the favorite food to deer. We have put out carrots, corn & apples. they will eat all of the carrots before touching the others, every time.

Two things will help, one always having food out for them will have them coming back day in and day out like clock work. My father in law lives near a Metro Park and thier are tons of deer in the park. Every night he goes out and throws corn out for them and within minutes the deer coming running, no joke. They hear the lid from the garbage can open and the scope of the corn and they know it's dinner time.
Second, if you can plant something that grows in every year that the deer like to eat. Any sporting goods store will have a bunch of products, or you can just plant field Rye grass they love that.

They eat carrots first because they are soft and shaped perfect to get back to their hind teeth. as they have no upper teeth in front. Its much easier for them to chew on carrot shaped items. I have even cut my beats up for them, It is one of my little secrets. The easier you make it for deer the more action you'll get.

after my inital success I haven't seen a deer since

Been putting the food out each night, something seems to be getting it before morning, don't know if it is deer or something else. The deer lick hasn't even been touched.
Edit: wouldn't you know just after I post this she shows up :div20:

Up this high they take forever to green out. In the lower elevations it is pretty much green. Another week or so for us.

I used to work at an apple orchard and some guy use to come and pick up our bad drops. The good ones we used for cider, but the ones that are to far gone we would give away. You might be able to try that?
