well i got the drive shaft out of my 89 indy what was told to be broken here are some pics can anyone tell me if it is broken or not??
TDI-HAM
Yes your drivesshaft bearing on the chaincase side is definitely broken !!! Pull the inner race off the shaft and press a new bearing into the chaincase. I would check over the chaincase real well to be sure that there was no damage to the casing. While you are at it,change PTO driveshaft bearing, the jackshaft bearing in chaincase and get a new seal and o-ring for the driveshaft to chaincase and you'll be all set. Better to do it now than have a breakdown in the middle on January 50 miles from home.
Phantom Rider
The speedo side bearing is also bad (that rusty round thing on the opposite end)
I would say your speedo was not working.
If the sled has over 5,000 miles on it I would at least change the chain while I had it all apart.
jbshocks
doesn't need the shaft though. just bearings. I often find these old nasty bearings like this are easier to cut off. If you have a cut off wheel slice into them just short of hitting the shaft then knoclk them off with a chisel.

I dont know alot about the bearings so i dont know what bearings you are talling abou..i checked over the chain case and where the drive shaft is the gear or something chewed the hole up pretty good and alot of stuff is broken in half i will get some pics...

Methinks you may need a chaincase too, hard to tell from the angle of the pics.
Best bet may be to pull and inspect the chaincase carefully, remove the old bearing pieces and see if the lower hole is damaged.
It also looks like the chain and gears got into the side of the case there,I'd replace those too at this time.
Phantom Rider
Ow!
It looks like the case is salvageable just the bearing race looks chewed up to me.
Like gator said pull the case and clean it up good and hope for the best. If you don't know what you're doing get a manual.
I would also change the chain tensioner, they like to get stress cracks in them between the piviot and the tensioner bolt.

I gotta ask... Didn't you hear the noise that thing had to be making?

It wasnt me who broke it i got the sled for free and he said i could do anything for it..so i am trying to fix it...so i should pull the case out and inspect it??...and the hole where the drive shaft goes through is pretty chewed up..anyone know what to do??

Thanks
Partsguy
Do you have a better picture of the lower chaincase with the damaged remains of the bearing cage removed? If the chaincase where the bearing seats is not elongated of porous the chaincase may be ok. In the older Indys the bearing was your seal so this needs to be in good condition.
mike500
Like these guys are saying, you need to replace both of the driveshaft bearings. Remove the speedo side bearing from the driveshaft and also remove the inner race of the chaincase side bearing that is stuck on the shaft there. As far as those pics go, it seems like your chaincase is still salvagable. It looks like part of the outer race of the bearing is stuck in the chaincase there. Remove that and clean it all up and get all new bearings and you should be good to go. I would also change both jackshaft bearings (the two upper ones on both sides of the sled). These are the upper chaincase bearing and the other one is behind the secondary clutch on the jackshaft. Good luck

ok ill get that now... ok here it is..is it better or do u need another pic or is that good???..and on removing the chain case just do i need to take the top gear out of it???

Thanks :div20:
Partsguy
Yes, you must remove your top gear to remove your chaincase. You still have to remove the remains of that damaged bearing cage out of your chaincase also.
Don't know if you have a manual, but this diagram might help you see whats there.

yes i have the manual and the shop manual so i will take it off on the weekend

Thanks

if it wasnt for u guys i wouldnt be doing this

Oneof the drive shaft bearing is the same as the speado side bearing, your
missing the jack shaft bearing in the top of the chain case that somebody
mentioned theres also clutch side beariing on the jackshaft that should be checked. And yes to the first ?Its still hard to tell in the pic if the case is good, take the old bearing out with out gouging the case if it looks like the bearing will seal all the way around when its out its good.Good luck when you put it together hand tighten the ajuster then back off 1/4 turn ,then check this & the lube often threw the season.

some of the seals in the hole are broken in half..i dont know if u can see those or not....

Thanks

Sounds like you have it under control. You should replace both upper & lower chaincase brgs # 3514303 (6205) and your drive & jackshaft brgs # 3514501.
There is an o-ring # 5410401 that goes in the chaincase behind your upper bearing. As others have suggested you should replace the chain tensioner # 1332213 which would be good advise based on the rust on the bearings. Also your chaincase cover gasket # 5410277 should also be replaced . Your speedo key # 3280017 on the angle drive side is probably snapped as-well. Make sure your chaincase brg snap rings are in good shape it looks like your lower one is toast # 7718406.:div20:

If your ordering from a local dealer take your old parts with you to insure their giving you the parts you require. If your ordering via phone by discription make sure you give them a detailed list. If it will help tell me what you want and I can give you a complete list with part #'s. :beerchug:
