hi there got a problem with me 1996 powder special 580. It runs fine just seems to be missing just slightly, then its fine seems to very intermitted problem. I checked over the wiring last night. The only thing i cant test is the CDI box cat doesent give me the specs says must use there tester.

here are what everything tested to.

specs:
Ignition coil
Primary coil 0.30 ohm mine tested 0.31 ohm ( +/ - 15%)
Secondary coil 6300 ohm mine tested 5789 ohm ( +/- 20%)

Charge coil 160 ohm mine tested 171 ohm ( +/- 20%)
Trigger coil 17ohm mine tested 16.5 ohm ( +/- 20%)
Lighting coil 0.22 ohm mine tested .19 ohm ( +/- 20%)

Spark plug cap 5000ohm mag side 5350 ohm pto side 4758 ohm ( +/- 20%)

Spark plugs that are in sled are NGK BR9EYA

please if you see anything wrong with this give me your thoughts

i can buy a CDI box aftermarket for about $100.00. Just dont want to buy electrions that i dont need or wont fix the problem.

My first guess is the infamous Cat throttle safety switch. This is always the first check if you have an intermitent spark interuption. Bypass the throttle safety switch and see if still acts up. If you have the closed ingnition, square kill switch, you need to use the bypass plug in the three prong connector near the base of the handle bars. If you have the open ignition, round kill switch, you only need to unplug the three prong connector. This will disable the kill switch as well as the throttle safety switch. If disabling the safety switch fixes the problem the system can usually be fixed by replacing the washers on the throttle pivot pin. A couple of bucks for parts and five minutes should have everything back to normal.

Thanks and those have been bypassed for years, never felt like getting suck some where.

the only other thing i didnt check was the voltage regulator.

but good old Cat used the same CDI box on my old 79 jag 340 well the wiring codes are the same. Can i use this box? would much rather test sled with this then buy something i cant return.
